Philip,
If that were the case then ALL 308/328/Mondials would do this (they don't).

My 84 mondial does a similar thing, I put it down to the tank being split and the fuel going from one side to the other

It could be the sending unit in the gas tank. But after replacing mine, it still says it is full until it is 1/4 and then jumps all over the place. I carefully reset the trip meter every time I fill the tank.

Like most Democrats, he was full of gas and his actual views were difficult or impossible to gauge, depending on the popular political winds, but Fritz . . . . oh, I'm sorry, I read the subject line too quickly and thought you were talking about the former VP/Senator. :-)

No, the gauge doesn't seem to go back and forth when it gets low. It goes off at 4/10ths of a tank, every tank, whether going fast or slow, left or right. Tank in, tank out it always shuts down at 4/10ths but works just fine till then. I'll try cleaning the tach.

does it go back and forth when it get low - I beleive the sensor is in only one of the tanks so when you turn one way hard all the gas goes into the other tank and the sensor starts to go haywire - just par for the course :-) the tach is another thing - check the connection, it may need to be cleaned.

I've got an '82 Mondial 8 with a gas gauge that reads true and accurate until it hits about 4/10th's of a tank. Then it suddenly drops to an 'empty' reading and I have to go by odometer guesswork until the tank truly runs out. Does anyone know if a simple swapout of the Veglia electronic gauge will remedy the problem or could it be deeper than that, something having to do with the sending unit, etc.? Since I've also got a fritzy tach in the same car, I suspect the notoriously unreliable Veglia electronics, but I'd like to be a little more confident of the source before I pop for a new gauge.
