Just had the trusty 'GT4 on a hoist. This thread got me wondering. Inspected the cable, but I can't figure out how you would replace a broken one. How do you snake it thru it's pipe? |

Ahhh, MadFerrari, a 54 Merc. Beautiful car, I had one. The engine wouldn't pull a sick wh-re off a pi--pot, but what a dream cruiser. Those were the days. |

Have had this sort of thing happen to me three times in this lifetime. First time in 1958 in my '54 Merc, second time in 1961 in my '61 Vette, the last in my 246 Dino, (the first two were not a broken cable but linkage). The solution is simple. Engine off, place in first gear, start engine and drive away, shift up (and down) without clutch. Always remember to slip it into neutral when approaching a stop. The first time it happened I was only 50 miles from home but had to continue a 300 mile trip to register at Cal Poly and then drive home. |

Carrying a cable with you sounds like a good idea. Where would you find a place to install it on the Ferrari if you were on the road. Hobble to a gas station I guess. |

I carry a spare cable in both my cable equipped cars. BE PREPARED. |

Been there done that, twice. Once in the GTB and once in the GTSi. Speed shift between gears and start the car in gear at intersections. Take the route that has the least number of full stops. It's doable, but it sure is stressful.

Call my dad and tell him to bring the truck with some extra cable to clamp to the clutch cable where it broke, then limp home. If I absolutely ahd to leave and couldn't get help from anyone else I would cut out part of my jumper cables and pull a clamp off something, maybe an extra one if I have it around and rig it to work. I wouldn't drive with no clutch though, some people say you can and do, but the Ferrari trans is so girly (sorry Nika) IMO, not a trans I would want to be banging gears in. If I had a little hill to work with I would consider putting it in second with the ignition on and letting the engine kick start down the hill, then I could avoid using the clutch and just plan my trip to not have to stop, although to stop I guess I would have to just pull it out of gear with a little tap of the gas. |

What would you do if your clutch cable broke and you were in too isolated a place to get immediate help? Just curious. |
