I think you push it in to heat, then insert the cigarette down the center to light...

And how does the lighter work anyway? Six months and I still haven't figured out how to use the stock lighter to light a cigarette. I'm really not that stupid!

I am in the same boat as you Steve. I have done so much to my 308, (restoration, upgrades, lowering, etc.) that I don't really have much left to do to it and I am contemplating a 88.5 (or newer) TR or a 355. My wife wants a house on the lake so I guess it's one or the other.

Jerry,

ALWAYS glad to help when i can. Have been busy changing MANY of the parts on the 308 to new OEM or better. Want her to look band new factory fresh (or better). And now i sit here with a great (IMHO) 308 and am looking at the 512TRs... (Sigh) Does it ever end? LOL

Rhetorical question: If everyone in the world was insane, then are the insane sane?

Enjoy the Drive,

The Don,

Went into my basement and got my old lighter from the '85 308GTS QV...

The photo below shows the deal. Basically, the copper CENTER is positive. Below it is the silver negative. Then the yellow wire of the cigarette lighter is the light (only active when headlights are on).

Upload

Hope this helps.

Enjoy the Drive,

Steven R. Rochlin

"The Don"

Test the wires. I converted my cigarette lighter to a "normal" one, and at first, I assumed the black wire was the power wire (just like in a house). DOH!!! After blowing out my phone charger, I went ahead and tested the wires. It turns out that the other wire (yellow, I think) was the hot wire.

Don,

Center of lighter is the positive, the outside part is negative. Forget the exact wire color, yet it is obvious once you get the female lighter part out of the console.

Simple way to test - get a 12v bulb and a piece of wire. Hold the base of the bulb on a good ground (ebrake handle?) holding the bulb between your thumb and forefinger, slip one (stripped) end of the wire under your thumb on the side of the bulb (metal part). Touch the other end of the wire to each of the contact points in the cig lighter. Whichever one results in the light lighting is the positive (+) voltage. Your car is negative (-) ground.

I bought a new one so I can charge my cell phone but I am a touch confused on the wiring.

on the old one, the black wire was connected on the neck and the other was connected on the base.

Which is the power?

Can anyone post a pic?
