When I hear "sounds like a Camaro/muscle car" from self professed "Mech-Challenged"...my reaction is Cracked Header....the idle noise may be exaust noise. John; try a good visual all around the two exaust headers looking for evidence of exaust leakage/black soot like you see inside the muffler pipes...there should be none. Then/or, try holding a big rag over both exaust outlets with the car running. If cracked...you should continue to hear exaust noise/rattle from the engine area on that side....no crack would yeild a very muffled/quiet sound. If one is cracked try for a warranty replacement of both under the 7/70 or 8/80 federal emmissions warranty discribed in your books. If the dealer balks...call Ferrari N.A....don't pay.

Please let us know how it turns out.

I posted the same time you did. Disregard the valve thread.

John
Have you turned the battery switch off lately? If so follow the manual on restarts, but more probably the exhaust bypass valve. Ferraris valve design is flawed. With use, the valve accumulates a small amount of rust which forms around the shaft and flap valve, if you rap the engine in this condition the valve can stick open. Usually the check engine light comes on. If the spring in the vacuum module is ok, clean the valve thoroughly take it to a weld shop and have them weld a SS wash on the other side of the valve which prevents the valve shaft from shifting over and the valve sticking on the wall of the assembly, or $1600.00 for the valve and $400.00 for factory installation. Happened to me, but the dealer paid. Still have the old valve for when it fails again.

MarkM: thx for your thoughts...I hope you and Mitch are right about this.

Mitch: I just saw your excellent diagram on the 355 suspension...would you happen to have a similar diagram on the "bypass valve" that I could follow along for mechanically challenged idiots like me?

Check not just the valve itself, but the hose that connects it to the tube which carries the vacuum to the valve.

Check your exhaust bypass valve, see if it is stuck open. This is the valve you see between the air filters in the hole in the exhaust heat shield.

My 355 spider is idling rough and when I accelerate it, its producing a muscle car sound more like a Camaro than that of the signature Tubi sound. There were no check engine or slow down indicator lights, nor did I experience a loss in power. I worry that my headers may have cracked. Anyone else had this problem?
