Ken, The fuel pump does NOT start until the car is started (during cranking). It does not come on like many cars by just turning the ignition key to the second position. It does not need to prime because of the fuel accumulator. You can check to see if the fuel pump is pumping by taking the 2 wire lead off the fuel distributor and then turn the key to the position before it starts cranking and the pump should run. This ofcourse verify's it is running but still may not be putting out enough pressure. |

Ken--I don't believe you should hear the fuel pump wth the QV. I don't have any sound coming from mine either ( also an '85) nor do I recall hearing it in any QV I test drove. However, I do recall hearing the pump prime in a number of carbed cars I looked at during my search Good luck with the hot start issue, Ken. |

I can hear my fuel pump start up, run for a few seconds, then stop if I just turn the key on w/o cranking. |

If you measure/monitor the supply side fuel pressure (running, off, running again, hot, during hot restart, etc.), I think it would give you a good indication of the whole pump+accumulator+check valve+regulator system health or non-health (assuming you could locate the various running/not-running/time supply side pressure specs in the relevant WSM for your model). But if you'd be paying someone else to do this diagnostic work, you could probably just get a new pump from importec for about the same $ (if you can swap it out yourself). Good luck with the investgation/fix... |

If you should, then you're not alone - as I don't hear mine either. It thought "hearing the pump" was specific to carb'd cars? |

When I turn the key in my 308QV to start the car, should I hear the fuel pump? Everytime I turn the key to start the car I never hear the pump priming the system. I always thought that I should hear the pump for a few seconds prior to starting the car. I still have my hot start problem, and I think my fuel pump may be the problem. Is there a way to confirm that the fuel pump is working correctly? Ken
