Forzafan,
When you check the fans by shorting the radiator switch, if the fans still don't come on, there is no power getting to them and I highly suspect the fusebox. My fusebox gets oxidation on the contacts and then no power, even with a good fuse. Remove the fuse, clean the contacts with contact cleaner (or even some steel wool...but disconnect the battery if you use steel wool so you don't short something) then bend the fuse holders towards each other a bit so they hold the fuse tighter. Don't forget to clean the fuse contacts.
I had a high beam that wouldn't come on. I went and installed a new bulb before I realized it was just a dirty contact in the fusebox. D'OH!

BTW, if your fuses are like mine, they are short and stubby ceramic cylinders with the fusable link on the outside (fire hazard!) They make modern replacements that are normal looking glass fuses with the link inside the glass. They look like a normal glass fuse but shorter and with points at the ends. They are called "German" fuses and any automotive store has them.

Best of luck

Jonathan

Pull the two wires from the radiator switch at the lower right side of the radiator. Touch the two wires together and the fans should turn on (ignition switch should be on, I think). If they come on, easy fix, you need a new switch. Get one for a VW rabbit (two pole) about $15. If they do not come on, you have bigger problems....

Strange though that coolant/steam would come from the front, it should come from the back...you may have blown a hose, or your radiator is leaking too.

Measure the resistance between the ends of the fuses just like any other fuse(fuses is fuses).

After that, get a 12V test light & go chaseing wiring. Start with the relays & the back of the fuse panels.

Steam coming out of the front is not cool. At best it was coming from a leaky hose clamp, or you split a hose. At worst you've got a leaky radiator.

Took my QV out today becuase it was so beautiful. After a couple of minutes the radiator temp soared to the max and steam started coming out of the front. When I pulled over, I realized the fans weren't running! They've run fine in the past couple of weeks, but suddenly they're dead. I can't tell if their fuses are ok because I've never seen fuses like these before. Is there an easy way to tell? What else would I check? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
