Peter R. -- Yes, made a simple aid to drive the new rear main seal in around the (protruding) crank end, and pulled the old seal out with the intermediate plate in place (although it really just sort of fell out as there wasn't much of a seal anymore between the old seal OD and the bore in the inter. plate) |

Steve M.: Well, you know why my inter. plate was off to begin with J. Seriously though, going back in my memory, I guess you could pry the old seal off in situ, but what did you use to install the new seal? Most commercial multi-size seal installers have elevating steps from the biggest on the bottom to smallest on top, that would foul on the crank, did you use some sort-of tubular device? I used the term Thrust Bearing, assuming that Martin was talking about the throwout bearing. What Edward mentions, I've always refered to as "Thrust Washers" |

Martin -- try this: http://www.expensivecar.com/clutch.htm but I'd still suggest that you have a peek at the SPC too for such a project. (If you don't have it, try Steve Jenkins' site -- I think he has a .pdf there of the '78 SPC which is the same as your '79 clutch-wise.) Peter R. -- I don't recall having to removing the intermediate plate to replace the Rear Main Seal? -- just the flywheel. |

I had a 1977 308 gtb that I had to change the rear seal on. I was able to pull everything out without pulling the engine, but I needed a socket with 4or 5 prongs (like a key) to pull one of the nut off. That was a couple of years ago so things are a bit foggy |

If you are talking about the crankshaft thrust bearing, you would have to pull the engine and seperate the transmission from it to get to the main thrust bearings which are in four pieces. The release bearing operates the clutch which is what Peter is talking about. |

Do not forget about the special socket needed. Rick |

You'll have to remove the bellhousing, clutch, flywheel and intermediate plate to remove and install the rear seal (the rear seal is contained in the intermediate plate). The Thrust bearing can easily be removed from the output shaft when the bellhousing is off (a small circular spring holds it on to the fork). I got my timing belts from Dennis McCann for $16.75 ea (a few months ago). |
