Hey Scott, Have you pulled the compressor yet? Just wondering how you are getting along with the project?

Steve, I'm glad you commented on this. I recalled the thread but I couldn't remember if it was you who did a R&R on your compressor. This should give Scott a little more insight in to the job.

Scott I did mine last year on a 77 308 GTB Carb. model. It was tight but worked out all right. I was doing a few maint. items so I had the engine cover removed. You need to go through the standard process of removing the wheel and fender liner and then take off the belt tensior and remove the compressor and the compressor bracket. I think the bracket is the key. You can take this out from the wheel side. After that I removed the compressor from the TOP ( need to play with it to get it out) Replacing the clutch was a snap , just 4 bolts and a hit with a rubber hammer and it came off. Replacement is the reverse process. Also I don't know what kind of a problem you have with the FI hardware because I had the carb. air cleaner removed and had room. Took me a full day to do the whole job. Keep the A/C hoses clean and tape a plastic bag over them. I refilled with Freon 134A because it's cheap and you don't need a licence to buy it (about $30 a pound here). A/C works great after 7 years not working. (replaced receiver dyer). Good Luck Steve

Just a thought here, I can't imagine putting the clutch on after you install the compressor. I would think you would remove the old compressor, transfer the old clutch to the new compressor and install the unit.

Scott, are you going with the the R 12 or the R 134 A? I haven't R&R one of these compressors but it can't be that bad once you get the inner fender and the belt cover off. According to Herb on a earlier thread it is fairly simple to replace the clutch. You can buy a puller but Herb uses a simple bench method. Maybe he can offer some help.

It is a huge pain in the ass. Some people have to remove the gas tank and others are lucky enough to avoid this additional complication. I was one of the lucky ones. I took mine out when I did a major engine service so I don't know what are the minimum things that have to removed but you may have to remove the water pump, I don't remember.

Having the clutch off would certainly help but I don't know if you will have the space and angles to put the clutch on after the compressor is in place.

Best of luck.

I just bought a new york compressor for my 82' 308. Now I just need to put it in. Does anyone know of a sure fire method of getting it done and/or any tips that would help? Also, I believe I have to remove the compressor clutch and put it back in the new unit. Is that easier said than done or can I tackle this whole thing in one day?
Thanks,
Scott
