I also bought a 36mm for my recent major service. From Sears is was $7. I really thought the price was mis-labeled but the guy said that's right. I kept it too.

Not neccesary at all, deep sockets are available everywhere, you need not turn one down on a lathe. I'm not the only one here using a Craftsman, so go to Sears and pick one up. If you're unsure here's a tip I got from a specialty tool store:

When buying the 36mm socket for the crank pulley I was looking at a Gray Tools socket. It was about $34 Cdn, pretty pricey for just ONE socket, the salesman told me "you didn't hear it from me, but take this home, wrap it well with masking tape, use it and bring it back and I'll give you your money back. But I don't want to see a scratch on it!" His reasoning was how often would I use such a socket (in retrospect though with this rebuild...LOTS). Here, I'd have a quality tool and not suffer the cost, but I bought it anyways. Turns out Sears sells a Craftsman 36mm for $9.99 Cdn, Damn!

Moral of the story: you can never have enough tools, just shop around first.

ANONYMOUS A 13/16 thin wall deep socket must be used. If you can't find one, or if you don't have the one in the tool kit, you may have to cut one down on a lathe or your grinding wheel. MR. MAGOO

I use a 13/16 ( I have 80GTSi)deep socket. I took the rubber plug grip out of the inside of a normal spark plug socket and put it in the 13/16. And just used a short extension. Lamont

I have found that some plug sockets are too large in diameter to fit into the plug wells on my 2V 308. The top edge of the well tubes has a lip as if it were crushed in manufacturing when the raw stock is being cut to legnth. Try a high quality Craftsman or Snap-On socket. They are higher quality and thinner wall than the no name mass-merchant brands. I use a universal adaptor and a 3" extention on the front bank. These sockets will also accept a 3/4, 13/16 or 7/8 socket on the drive end. So a deep socket can be used to drive them if a small variation from the standard extention legnth is needed.
Good luck,
Robert

Yes, I guess QV's are different dimensionally, I have no problem removing plugs out of the Sinistra head. After looking in the engine bays of 308 GTB/S and then looking into my GT4, I notice there's more room in my car than the others.

I use a Craftsman 6-point socket and there's enough room for that too, but I guess that's different in size as well.

The only thing I remove to access the Sinistra plugs is the air-box.

I just realized that my previous post was not applicable to your 2V car due to the fact that the angles are all different from a 4V. Sorry for the possible confusion. Best of luck.

I find that on my 84 308QV it is difficult to apply a sparkplug socket with 5" extension to the 'front' head plugs due to the close proximity of the firewall. I used a sparkplug socket, two inch extension and a swivel. This way, as the spark plug was being removed from the hole, I could make the turn.

I haven't had the plugs out on my 328 yet but I did have a problem on another car like this. The socket had walls too thick and would not go down into the head. I ended up buying a Snap-On 6 point and it woked fine.

You're OEM tool kit includes the proper spark plug wrench (if you still have it).

Nope, just attach a short extension (5") to your spark plug socket and it'll reach.

79' 308, How do you get the plug wrench down to the spark plugs? The socket I have won't fit down in the holes where the plugs are? Is there a special tool or do you have to remove the valve covers?
