Problem solved.....thanks for the help! Shifter is a 2 piece unit....looks nicely designed....shaft just slides through the 2 piece "clamp". Front "bearing" just got something in there and scratched things up. With some fine sandpaper I just smoothed out both surfaces, cleaned it very well, and lubed it up......works nice now. |

OK....I removed the pan today and everything looked just fine. Separated the shifter shaft at the joint near the transaxle....the transmisson shifts fine just moving the bare shaft but the shaft to the shifter is locked solid....I guess it is time to pull up the console and unbolt the shifter and see what is going on. Was there a change to a 308 type shifter at some point during the production of the 246? This car is production April 72...but my parts book was printed in November 1970. This thing looks more like a 308 shift system. Thanks for any comments. |

The same happened to my -80 308 GTSi, I just lift up the gallery guiding the gear lever and it went loose. Two screws. when I had the gallery off I tested the gear possitions and found out that the gear stick would like to go more left than the gallery allouds. That was the situation with every gear but 1:st was the worst. This I fixed by turning the axle joint under the car, just before going into the engine. |

It could be the fingers on the shift-fork-shafts that have loosened and cannot move the forks for the syncronizers. Don't drive it anymore! Drop the tranny pan and check to see if forks are moving all of the way.

1972 246 started shifting hard...then harder....happened very quickly. Now afraid to force it. Any suggestions as to the problem? Thanks! |
