You can do as you say without dipping the clutch the first time if you are able to move the lever to neutral easily. I do it all the time just as you describe because I go to neutral as I am breathing out of the throttle. Timed correctly the input shaft is unloaded for an instant and you can get into neutral just as easily as if dipping the clutch. The key is in the timing of your actions. If you have to pull the shifter any harder than you do dipping the clutch then you're "missing". Some people find they prefer to dip the clutch the first time because it is easier for them to keep their rhythm established. Regardless you are doing no stress to the gearbox as long as you can pull the shifter easily and smoothly just as if you were using the clutch.

The purpose of a clutch on any car is to remove the load from the gearbox by decoupling it from the engine. The same decoupling can be accomlished by the small amount of backlash in the gear teeth; this allows the gearbox to be unloaded for a slight moment any time you back out of the throttle.

I drive this way both on the street and at the track. In rush hour stop and go I don't use the clutch at all except from a complete stop, but it takes practice and the consequences of screwing it up can be severe.

Any particular reason one must depress the clutch before pulling the lever into neutral? I would lift off the throttle of course but is there still too much strain to do this without the clutch? I don't hear any nasty noises or anything and it doesn't require any extra effort...

I ask because if we can skip that first step on the clutch pedal, we can get the same synchro saving benefits of "double-clutching" without having to push the damn pedal twice. My left knee will love me. Instead of clutch, neutral, blip to match rpms, clutch, gear, go it would be neutral, blip, clutch, gear, go.
