Rob - would injector cleaner make the car run rich (or think it's running rich)?

Thanks guys!
Problem has not returned - I'll be pulling codes
this weekend anyway.

I'll let you know what I find.

Davey,

I agree with Ernie, get the codes first. Then reset the ECU's and keep driving until you experience drivability issues or continued MIL's.

I am intimately familiar with the additional ground strap on the lambda sensor. We installed many in the 1993-4 period on 348's. I used coated woven copper ground strapping wire, a hose clamp and ring terminal crimped and soldered. This is to assist the ground circuit for the lambda sensor. The ECU requires less than 2W, so this modification cured many misfires during that time.

I had a lemon-law buy-back as my first experiment in 1993, worked perfectly. Cleaning all grounds and connectors works magic.

Do a search of the archives for additional information on:
Thermocouple ECU
Oxygen sensors
Lambda sensors
Ground connection
Pin connector
ECU reset
ECU error code
All searches include '348'.

Hours of reading.

Rob

Ps, octane boost is a waste, injector cleaner with Techron is not.

Disconnect the battery. Reconnect after minute or so. Once connected leave car to idle for about 10 mins so the ECU can reset them selves. Lights should not reappear. This has worked on my friends 348 TB 1991.

If it was the check engine light that came on your gonna have to pull the error code out. In your owners maunal it will tell you how to do it. After you get the code it will lead you in the direction you need to go. However the engine codes are very broad in telling you what the problem is. You could be having some ingition problem or a fuel problem. Just start with the code first then go from there.

Ernie - it was the check engine 5/8 light.
Drove all day today and no light......?
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the light or not but yesterday night - had
some trouble starting it and gave it a little gas then died...smelled a little gas.... could feel rpms
slightly go up and down while driving..then the llight came on.

Ran perfect today - put some octane boost / cleaner in with full tank too. Is that ok?
Idle seems almost perfect - dead-on 1000

Davey,

I have a 1993 348 and my cats don't have ground straps on either one. Each cat has an oxygen sensor and a thermocouple (temperature sensor). The thermocouples send the temperature of the cat to the ecu. It is important to know the temp of the cats, but more importantly to shut the bank down if the cat is over heating due to some other fuel / oxygen problem. According to the parts manual I don't see a ground strap. I think what you are calling a ground strap is really the thermocouple. Some say you don't really need them, I think you should keep them inplace. Maybe the previous owner took them off because the lights kept coming on. Also, from what I have read, it rare for a thermocouple to go bad. It is more likely that the ecu for that bank is bad. The part number for an ecu is 142581 (cost about $250). The part number for a thermocouple is 144270 (cost ??). Hope this helps.

Banks 5/8 is on the left/drivers side. Was it your slow down 5/8 or check engine light? If it was the slow down light I would check the exhaust ecu's first. They usually go bad. They are nothing more than electronic thermometers. The easiest way to check if they are good is to switch them from one side to the other. If the slow down light then comes on for banks 1/4 then you know that is the problem. You can just unplug it for the time being until you get a new one. All they do is monitor the temperature of the cats to make sure you don't over heat them. The car will run without them plugged in, just the ecu will not know what the temp is of the cat. Now if that doesn't work then it could be that the O2 sensors are going bad.

Should there be a grounding strap on both
cat sensors (they screw into cats)?

There is a grounding strap on the passenger side cat but not drivers side....?

Also, If I'm looking at the rear of the car,
bank 5/8 is on which side?

My chk eng 5/8 came on last night... the one ground looks kinda rusty too!
