I would be HAPPY to pay a 20% sales tax if there were no income taxes.

their healthcare is not the best, it has really declined over the last 10 years as it struggles with rising costs and aging populations.

Matt -

I dunno...Our health care is "free" but we pay for it out of our income tax and "National Insurance Contributions",another tax at source. Plus unless ya leg's about to fall off there are waiting times that can literally go into years.

Those that can afford it pay for insurance so get the best of both worlds. Having not tried any other system cannot say if it is better or worse than others !!

Hopefully I shan't be needing to find out !!

Frank -

We pay Income Tax like everyone but we also pay VAT which means value added tax. It's just like sales tax which is generally added (I believe) at the checkout in most States in the US.

We run at 17.5% here. Food, books and children's clothes are exempt I think.

Jeff, please tell us Yanks about VAT. Is that instead of income taxes or do you have to pay taxes on your income plus VAT ? There's a lot of talk in the USA Congress about doing away with our income tax and replacing it with a National Sales Tax. I love the idea, but wouldn't want to end up paying both.

Tony -

I shouldn't be getting involved with 355 as it's not a Classic yet.... but thought the following might help...

Bypass valve is 606.80
Hose is 17.80

Sounds like the 800 you've been quoted is the valve + 1 hour's labour + VAT.

Anyway, hope this clarifies/helps.

Thanks.the service was 12.5 k ,not 13 k ,my mistake. I understand that on earlier cars[mine's '96] this was quite a big service.I am returning car to Manu who supplied Tubi for him to check out whether valve has gone or not and if it has i'll try and source a recond. part. I'm being quoted 800 by a main dealer to replace valve!

The bypass valve is vacuum operated above 3500 RPMs. The rubber hose that couples the vavle to the ?brass? tubing is a known area of maintanence. Replacing it yourself should cost on-the-order-of 10 minutes and $2.00

I'm not familiar with a 13K checkup, but as you have noted, it's pretty easy to tell if the valve isn't working just by test driving the car. Especially with a Tubi!
If you check the archives you will note quite a few threads of others who have run into similar situations concerning this valve.
One even posted of a fix instead of buying a new one.

I hope you get it resolved soon
and let us know how you make out,
Pino

Pino,
Thanks for that.Should this valve have been checked over during a service? My car has just had a 13k service by a main dealer in the U.K.

Tony,
if you lift the engine cover on the 355 and look down between the two airbox housings, you will see a black fiberglass heat shield. The shield will have a cut out so you may see the cat bypass valve actuator with a vacuum line going to it. This vacuum line sometimes comes off either at the actuator itself, or at the vacuum pipe at the other end of the hose. Check that first.
If all is well, perhaps the valve (which is under the actuator) is stuck closed from corrosion. The actuator itself may have gone bad also.

Best of luck,
Pino

Can anyone explain what the cat by-pass valve is and does on a 355,pls? How big a job is it to replace and at what cost?
Thanks.
Tony.

Tony,
This is a stupid question...but is there water in the exhaust system? That would certainly effect the sound and performance. I might try driving it around for an hour and see if the water evaporates out.

I recently had a Tubi sport pack fitted with straight through pipes. The car was cleaned today with a pressure washer and ever since , the sound from the exhaust has been off. The usual F1-type howl above 4,00 RPM is now boomy and flat by comparison.I spoke with the guy who supplied the Tubi and he has suggested the cat by-pass valve has gone or else a solenoid has got wet and blown.I'm afraid i don't know much about these things and would be grateful for any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks.
Tony
