Jeff I have just changed the belts myself on my 1987 328, you can check the tension of the belts without removing anything. Stand at the right hand side of the car with the lid open, lean over and put your hand over the front bank belt cover. If you slide your hand inside the rear side you can feel the belt and move it a little, you don't have complete access of course but good enough to check if it is loose. You can do the same for the rear bank also, just a little more difficult to access, but only a 2-3 minute job to check both. When I bought my car this year it had done about 40K miles and the last service record was from 1999, so I have pretty much gone straight into a belt change, I would definitely agree that after about 5 years it is time for a change, not worth taking the risk after 5 years use.

Jeff, regardless, you are basically at the time for a change, so if it concerns you, just go ahead and schedule it. That would seem the prudent thing to do. I mean, even if everything checks out, you are going to have to do it in the next 12 months anyway, so for peace of mind, why not do it now? |

Jeff, There was a thread on here recently about belt "retensioning". You can inspect the belts through holes without removing covers. HOWEVER! Here is an exact quote from factory workshop manual "...never readjust the belt tension as the initial working play would reappear unchanged after a short time and the deformation from eventual adjustments, even only once, would cause a premature belt failure." It goes on to say always change belts when their removal becomes necessary. "Every 9300-12,500 miles, make a visual inspection." "At 25,000 miles driving belts must be changed." A couple of mechanics echoed these thoughts here recently. Dave |

Is their a way to inspect the T Belts and check tension on a 3.2 motor without removing the covers? How tight should the belts be? Should you be able to twist them? Martin mentioned you can hear loose belts slapping against the covers when the engine is cold, recently I have heard a slapping sound, I thought it was my alternator belt but it could be the t-belts. According to my records my belts were replaced 25k miles ago in 98. Thanks |
