Thanks to all that responded. It turns out it is the thermoswitch. We have one on the way. In the meanwhile does anyone know where we can get one immediately in the NYC area? Thanks again. |

Malcolm, I had a similar problem on a Boxer. I shorted the thermoswitch as you suggested and the fans worked. It was, however, not the thermoswitch, but the thermostat. Greg A |

The 512TR's have a well known (by some ;-)) Fan Relay Problem. The Factory issued a TSB to replace the Metal Relays with the Bosch Updated Plastic Relays. You might want to upgrade even if this turns out not to be your problem. |

Best way to test the fans is if you remove parts described by Jeff, then turn ignition on, remove the wires from thermoswitch and short together - the fans should run. Assuming the fans do run then the problem lies with the thermoswitch. BUT as Lou says the cooling fans, depending on temperature will cut in and out under normal conditions, so before you start stripping, just let the car run at idle and watch the temperature guage / cooling fans and see what happens I guess you have checked the coolant level !! |

Are you sure this isn't normal? My 512TR fans only go on when the water temp hits a certain level and go off when it drops

I believe it's at the bottom of the driver's side radiator, just in front of the rear wheel. You will have to remove the inner wheel well panel to get to it, not a big deal. Good Luck. |

We were out in our 1992 512TR today and the fans stopped working. Fuses are ok. Anyone know the location of the thermoswitch, or any other idea?? Thanks Anthony
