Correction, retract that last message. The block is painted. (I had to look at it in the sun to tell.):-)

Simon,

Until I build the second garage/workshop I will unfortunately have to be teased with these (and your) pictures! I have an atrocious habit of holding onto things of this nature and never letting them go!

FYI-Upon closer examination (of the car), the engine block is not painted in my car (91 TR), just the heads and valve covers.

Beautiful work

Keep the photos coming - Jeff, look forward to seeing the before and after photos :-)

WOW DAVID...Your engine looks great! I spent about 5 hours today using simple green and lots of elbow grease cleaning my engine. The only right way to do this is to remove all the bolt on stuff. I'm in a quandry....where do I stop? I also went around the engine bay for a couple of hours. Detailing is like the energizer bunny...you just keep going and going and going...

And for all who are interested, I will try and post some pics of my progress this week.

Thanks Boxer12 for the great reference photo.

Jeff,

Here is what a stock '91 looks like. Engine is painted, but intake plenums are not. Upload

Just painted my BB engine, while doing a rebuild...After the machine shop cleaned the block, I re-washed it with wheel cleaner and lots of soap and water. The paint I used was VHT 550F High Temp Universal Aluminum. Two coats, 20 minutes apart. The paint is solvent resistant, after it has been cured at 200F...(while running).

A couple of pics...Upload

Thank You Frank and Henryk....yep....always something to learn about these cars. I thought that some TRs engines looked pretty darn good. I scrubbed mine but couldn't seem to get that "bright" finish I see on others. Now I understand why. My mind is now made up since my motor is out of the car. Today I sealed up all the open connections and hoses with tape, plastic, and rubber bands. And now I'll go buy some cleaning stuff and get at it.

I learn something new every day. From now on I won't hesitate to paint the engine. I would guess the paint seals the pores from the casting process, to help prevent entry of dirt, etc.

Frank: Do you have the numbers of the proper paint used?

Ferrari engines are painted at the factory. Modern fuel injected ones have the intake runners/plenums painted with crinkle silver paint with the block being painted non-crinkle.

Except for the usual painted valve covers, etc. I have not seen a Ferrari engine painted, by the factory.

My Boxer motor was painted, but this was done while having the engine detailed, during the major service just prior to me buying it.

I would have a tendency to paint the engine, if I had it out of the car. Blasting with glass beeds is the prefered method of preparation, I believe.

Looking at many TRs, I see some have the intake plenums and runners painted a kind of silver crinkle finish. And I also see them just plain aluminum. The engine blocks always appear to be bare aluminum. The motor in my TR is bare aluminum except for the red items. Did the factory really paint these motors?
