Fixed! No squeals now. Thanks to everyone in both threads who helped me work through this. Best of all, it didn't have to go to a shop. I dig working on my own car. |

Tillman I just tensioned the belt on my 328 a few hours ago. I wedged a large flat bladed screwdriver betwen the top of the alternator and the lower edge of the adjusting bracket and levered gently. I recommend not completely loosening the bolt but just enough to allow it to move and then tighten while holding the screwdriver. It takes just a few minutes once you manage to get the wrench on the bolt head behind and much easier with the plastic wheel arch removed. PHOTO TO FOLLOW> |

It appears now that the squeal on startup with my 328 is the alternator belt. I have the car on jackstands and the fenderwell out. The alternator bolts loosen easily enough, but I can't figure out how to tighten the alternator. Where do you lever from, and with what, to be able to rotate the alternator forward? I've tried reaching underneath, and there's no access. I've also tried various combinations of crowbars and screwdrivers, but I can't seem to find the angle. I've looked in the tech manual and in the archives, and there's only "tighten the alternator belt" listed, but not how to do so. Thanks |
