Todd: At this point, if I were to make a guess, I would say that the relay has melted. If you want to try an experiment, unplug the relay in the upper right corner of the panel (power windows) and replace it with the relay from the upper left corner (fog lights). Check first to make sure that the Bosch numbers stamped on the relays are the same. DO NOT plug the relay you take OUT of the upper right into any other socket!! And if the relay gets hot, pull it out ASAP. If it works, all you need is a new relay - not expensive. Now, I'm basing this advice on information from my own Owners Handbook for a 1990 348. As far as I know, the same information is true for your 1991. My scanner is temporarily out of order, or I would post a picture of the diagram. Good luck, and be careful! If this makes you nervous, don't mess around with it, let a professional handle it. | ||

todd: I got your email message about this late Monday night. Pretty strange symptoms! This is going to be a tough nut to crack. I can give you some hints on where to look if you feel brave enough to tackle it. I'll be guessing, as I haven't ever heard of such a problem, but who knows, you might be able to fix it. For now, unhook the battery cables and put it on a slow trickle charge. It's probably dead for good, but it wouldn't hurt to try. Do you have an Owner's Handbook? On page L14 you'll find a diagram of the fuse/relay panels. Unplug the relay for the power windows (in the upper righthand corner of the panel in the right floorboard) before reattaching the battery. Hook up the new or recharged battery and see if there is any indication that the windows are still trying to lift themselves. Pull the fuses if necessary (see diagram, #2 and #23), or eventually you'll melt wires or burn out the motors. If ANYTHING appears wrong, STOP and unhook the battery. At this point, hopefully your 348 is OK except for the windows. I'll check back tomorrow for a progress report. Somewhere, you must have something that has bridged wires or terminals. I can't believe that both switches have melted, but it's remotely possible that something has fallen behind the switches, or maybe wires have fallen out of the doorjamb plug and grounded against the frame? I don't know. One step at a time. If anyone else has any good ideas, please chime in! | ||

COULD BE TODD...CHECK YOUR POSITIVE-NEGATIVE TERMINALS ON THE BATTERY..MAKE SURE THEY ARE ON GOOD...GET A CHARGER.......AND CROSS YOUR FINGERS.. | ||

yeah all were fine now the dash lights are coming back but still very dull no click or anything when i try to start.does this sound like a bad battery bruce? | ||

its strange because neither side would do anything so thats why i thought it must be the battery if the wires were frayed on the one side why should that affect the other? | ||

YOU MIGHT HAVE A GHOST INSIDE YOUR F-CAR.. ACTUALLY, IF THE WIRES YOU SAID WERE WARM, YOU MIGHT HAVE A SHORT SOMEWHERE OR 2 WIRES ARE FRAYED AND TOUCHING EACH OTHER...RE-TRACE THE WIRES AS FAR BACK AS YOU CAN GO..LOOK FOR CUTS OR BARE INSULATION.. IF NOT, PUT A CHARGER ON IT, CHARGE THE BATTERY, AND PRAY IT DOESNT HAPPEN AGAIN.. | ||

bruce i just went out there and not even the radio works i unpluged the door wiring harness you know the big black twist one in the door jamb i'm not sure but the harness seems warm to me i havent ran the car since about 1:00 today i dont know why the harness would be hot also the sealtbelt receptacle is in the up position it doesn't even move noe when i open the door mnone of the console swithches r working •••• not happy. | ||

hey guys i pulled my car in the garage and i had the windows down when i went back outside a few minutes later they were up and the car wont start could the battery be dead or what do you guys think |
