Silly me. I thought I could "hot wire" the car and drive it while I wait for my replacement ignition switch to arrive. I can get the car to start, but it dies....like fuel starvatation. The fuel pump is humming and gushes fuel. Can't figure out if I have another problem with the fuel injection system or the emissions system...or if there is some kind of safety/security lockout. Anyone have any knowledge on this? Any suggestions? I have plenty of time as I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to write a book after I solve this one.

I was also looking for a replacment ignition electrical wafer switch forr my 87 Mondial 3.2(just the electrics, not the barrel) and couldn't find a new one as Ferrari apparently don't make them any more. Let me know if anyone finds any new ones out there.

With respect to compatibility, I believe that the Mondial 3.2 & 328 share the same switch but that the 308/QV/Mon 8/Mon QV is completely different and will not fit.

David, Glad to see you are on your way to getting your ignition repaired. Magoo

I got the switch out. Have to disconnect the battery and Ignition must be in the "ON" position and it wiggles right out. Then the mechanical tumbler section explodes all over the place. Be careful if you ever attempt to remove your ignition. On mine, the electrical switch is shot. It it riveted together and repair looks to be a last resort. It has only two positions, off and ignition on with the starter energized. I located a spare unit out of a "broken" (as they call it)LHD '85 Mondial in England for about $200. FNA told me they could order it , but it would probably never arrive. Therefore, I looked into wrecking yards and got a hit in England. There were only about 600 Mondials built, so there aren't many wrecked ones around and the parts go fast.

Turn the key to various positions, one at a time and then push the button each time and wiggle the key and tumbler outward.

The switch has to be in a certain position to depress the button, I think.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the ignition switch (barrel) out of the steering column. Is there a secret? I push the 4mm button and it won't budge. Any secrets?

Thanks for the procedure and the idea of the contact cleaner Peter. I will give it a try and see if it takes care of my problem.
Thanks
Dean

That should have nothing to do with it since the electrical part is seperate fronm the mechanical key portion.

I heard alternating two sets of keys help keep this issue at bay, not sure if true but can't hurt

I have an 87 Mondial, I don't know if yours is the same as mine but I can tell you how to remove the 87 Mondial switch.

Before you go to this trouble however, go to an electronics store and buy some contact cleaner aerosol spray. Whilst turning the ignition on and off spray liberally into the electrical side of the ignition switch. This may solve all of your problems, I suspect it will.

Procedure for a Mondial 3.2 is:

Remove the plastive column shroud. 5 screws.

Locate the 4mm diameter round spring based steel button (on the top of the barrel) that goes thru the ignition surround into the ignition barrel and push it in and hold it in.

Pull or push out the barrel towards you.

If it is the same as the Mondial 3.2 then the electrical switch comes off the bottom of the barrel quite easily and can be replaced. I think that it is the same switch wafer as is used in the 308 series as opposed to the 328 series which is different to the 308. The switch should be available for about US$100 but will likely need to be soldered on.

Thanks for the response. If anyone knows the way to remove the ignition switch, please post it or send me an e-mail. I will try and see what i can do to get in the steering column and remove the ignition switch. Wish me luck.

It most certainly sounds as if your ignition switch is shot - no idea though how to replace.

I have a intermittent problem with my ignition. When I turn the key to acc. sometimes the battery light, parking brake light, and clock come on. Other times it does not. Which ever way it comes up, when I move the key to start the car, it starts when the acc lights came on, but just turns over when the lights are off. I think I need to replace my key ignition system. I think this because when I wiggle the key it seams to work. The other weird thing is that when the battery light and parking brake light don't come on, the windows, radio, clock, a/c unit, and fuel pump don't work either. If I am on the right track, how do you remove the key ignition and replace it with a new one? I feel the contacts are bad. I have a 1981 Mondial 3.2.
