To be honest, it did take a little getting used to driving the F1. There are some features of the system that require you to change your start up procedure, shut off procedure, and general driving. Once you get used to it-piece of cake, but very frustrating if you haven't read the operator's manual and try to drive the car the first couple of times.
There are some driving situations that having a foot clutch makes easier (trying to move small distances when parking comes to mind), but the more I drive it, the more I enjoy it. Clicking off downshifts is extremely satisfying. I also like to spend time at the track, and it comes together so well in that driving habitat. The only thing I miss is being able to demonstrate perfect shifting coordination that is one of the great feelings of the "Ferrari Experience". Let's face it...not everyone can shift these cars gracefully even if they are familiar with manual transmissions. With the F1, anyone becomes the expert (provided you read the operator's manual a few times). But to cut to the chase, I do not regret the decision, it provides something different to the driving experience. Feel free to contact me with any other questions.

Joseph,

I had a rough idle, too, until Klaus at "TurboCenter Stockholm" synchronized the intake air throttle plates. They were slightly out of sync, causing a rough idle and the occasional "bbaaaaammm" from the exhaust when shifting at high revs. I loved the "bbaaamm" when racing in tunnels beneath Stockholm, but now the idle sounds "bbzzzzzzzz" instead of "bzzz-plopp-plopp-bzzzzz-plopp-plopp".

Another question to Joseph: Im thinking about upgrading my car (trading it in) for a 1998 F1. Do you miss your stick? The gear stick, of course :-)

Glad to see you're driving that car! That's the only way to enjoy it. (In my opinion). I am on my second 355, first was a '95 spider, now enjoying a '98 TS F1. On my '95, I definately had belt noise (the "chik" noise you describe), but I also had an uncharacteristic rough idle that was diagnosed as worn valve guides. Before I alarm you, I have talked to other owners in Europe, and none have had this situation, but here in the USA, mine was not the only one to display rapid wearing of the guides. This rough idle did cause things to vibrate in the engine bay a bit more than normal.
My current model has some belt noise as well, along with some noises coming from the F1 hydraulic pump (at first start up). My emissions air pump is on the noisy side as well. (located underneath the passenger side taillamp assembly).
Just some thoughts...
I hope you have a great spring thaw!

Joseph,

the car's got 42000 km on the clock, the most recent service was done at 40000 km. (that was like a month ago). Its a 1995, with Bosch motronic 2.7.

I had some rattling/squeking noise when the engine was cold, but they took care of that by changing the A/C and generator belt(s?) at the service.

A buddy of mine has similar "chik-chik-chik" sounds, but might not be that strong as mine. Maybe you could see if yo have the same noise in yours?

Peter, could you supply some more information? What year, how long has it been sitting, any recent maintainence? I have a 355 as well, and there are some noises, especially when the engine is cold. The belts are especially noisy in cold ambient temperatures. This could be issue #2 of your post.

I would not operate it any further than the dock where you should ship to me here in the U.S. along with a couple of those beautiful Blonde lasses and I will check out the noises for you and return everything this Fall.

Hello everyone! This is my first post in this board. Spring is imminent in sweden, its time to fire up the V8 in my 355!

How much noise is "normal" in a F355? I have two very annoying sounds from the engine -

1. Something that sounds like a soft "chik-chik-chik" (follows the rpm). You hear it clearly through the air intake through the drivers door. (LHD).

2. A weak rattling, sounds like "trrrrrrr..". (also follows RPM). This is heard if you open the engine hood. Sounds like its from the front right of the engine.

Am I paranoid? Should I care? Or will the engine blow any second?

Regards
Peter
