Bill, I have the same prob. except on my 308 the speedo sending unit is stripped (I think, but am not totally sure if the male end isn't bad as well). Am curious how yours turns out.

Thanks guys. I talked to Dave, at GT Car Parts who says the drag is most likely an O-ring but it should just pop out. He has some adapters in stock so I ordered one. This adapter is in an awkward position so I'll try a hose clamp and wire over the stripped thread portion to get a better grip on it.

Magoo, it's the male thread that's stripped, so replacement is the best course of action.

Bill,
Your speedo drive setup is very similar to a BB gearbox that I'm working on now. To remove the speedo drive adapter(Ref.53), first remove the "locking bolt" (Ref. 54). With the bolt removed, you'll be able to remove the drive adapter from the gearbox for either repair or replacement. Note that the adapter may be indexed to the bolt hole...when you reinstall it.

Regards,
David

P.S. When you get it out I would use a helicoil. The thread epoxy may not hold in that area where a lot of road shock occurs.

Bill, First of all ,No I haven't had the problem. I am sure that piece comes out because how else would you get to the driven gear underneath it? There probably are "O" rings on that piece, coupling, to seal it. You might have to apply slight pressure to it by prying it upward as you turn and pull. The "O" rings are probably hard not allowing it to pass by the internal groove. JMO

I need a little help.

The part that my new speedometer sending unit is supposed to thread onto is stripped. My first choice is to remove the piece and replace it. Failing that, I'll try some of that form-a-thread epoxy.

Will the piece, indicated in the drawing below, lift out once the set screw, item 54, has been removed? I removed the set screw and can rotate the piece with the stripped threads, about 20 degrees, but it doesn't seem to want to come out by just using my fingers. Has anyone removed this before?
