Rob,
There were two wires for the switch, plus a braided ground wire that attached to the attenna and the antenna cable itself. (this is for a 328). Go to the link I provided before, and you will find the antenna listed for $25! plus shipping. If you want a black one, they no longer stock it, but you can buy from the parts page to convert it. Just ask them for help, as you need to order a black mast, and the black cap/cover kit. Not stock to have a black antenna, but looks better on the 328 which has mostly black trim....

Dave,

How many wires did it have. I need a new one also. when I bought my car it had a bundle of relays and wire attached to the antenna but it neever worked. I threw them all away as they were obviously not stock. I am running solid core wires so it really doesn't matter but I would like to be able to raise & lower it for posterity.

Phil it is good to see you here!(I am on the tech group also)

For those of you who dont know Phil is pretty damn good F mechanic from down under!

Terry

I can only guess that as about 80% of European 246 Dino's have been restored, during restoration the position of the antenna has been moved to the roof - and lets face it, it looks much better on the roof

Cheers

Malcolm, thanks again. How about this post [All photo's and cars I've seen in UK and Europe had a roof mounted antenna from their dealers. This is common as it can apply to both left and right hand drive cars for any market. The left rear "fender" (wing in uk) brushes along the trees in the english country lanes so it would be on the right if anywhere!] fact or fiction?

Not wanting to give away how old I am, but in the early seventies I was a technician for Maranello Concessionaires and was doing Pre-Delivery checks on 246 Dino's / Daytonas, they all had Motorola antenna's fitted on the rear wings, stereos were fitted during the PDI if the customer requested so.
Just a thought, this was for European cars, maybe the American market had a different deal !

[Terry - they were fitted by the factory as standard equipment, originally they were Motorola, which are no longer available.]
[Most Dino's actually had a rigid roof antenna fitted at the dealer's if a stereo was specified for delivery.]

So, who is right here?

Phil,
I have no idea what you are talking about, I just bought an antenna off their website and it wired right up, no problem. :-)

It had the same wiring connections as in my previous 308 GTS.

The Ferrari semi auto's originally used reverse polarity from only two wires to go up and down. Most commonly sold ones nowadays use alternate feeds and a common ground to achieve their movement.

I haven't trawled the stores or sites for ages, but last I did (5 years ago?), reverse polarity units were unobtanium.

When doing a concours rebuild, I try to retain every last detail as factory...including wiring principles.

If they're available now, that's great. I've never dealt with US, only Europe and Australia.

Phil,
semi automatic antennas are available at www.antennaworld.com

As you stated, one can also convert a fully automatic antenna to semi-automatic operation as well....

Appreciate the help guys, the antenna I have, as far as I know, has nothing wrond with it other than the repairs on the bezel that I have already taken care of. I doubt that I ever use it seeing that I will probably never put a radio in this car, I like the surround sound it already has.

Steve your right, I have put quite a few electric antennas in other cars over the years, and most all of them could be bought either way.

Phil, all of the Dino's I've seen, the antenna's were mounted on top of the rear left fender, including mind.

Phil you got me a little confused here. You can buy manual electric antenna's or fully automatic antenna's at any speed shop or auto outlet store. They run from $30 to $70 . They also have them in Whitney's catalog.

Most Dino's actually had a rigid roof antenna fitted at the dealer's if a stereo was specified for delivery.

Nowadays, finding an original "semi automatic" electric antenna seems to be almost impossible. "Semi" meaning you can set it to any height you like, whenever you like...thus avoiding dragging your fishing gear from the garage roof when getting your car out the garage.

But with some slightly tricky wiring using a diode and a relay, you can make a fully auto one work just like the real thing. I've got the diagram in my tool box somewhere...haven't used it for years though now.

Thanks Malcolm, good to have you on board. I'm guessing you work with Jeff?

I was actually able to fix my problem, only had to trim a little off the bezel that goes against the body to make it look right and do a little adjusting on the bottom bracket. Only a trained eye would pick up on it now.

Terry - they were fitted by the factory as standard equipment, originally they were Motorola, which are no longer available, best thing is to try to match up your existing one at your local radio shop.

Over the years I've noticed several 246's with electric antenna's even though they had no radio, including mind. A couple of questions, did they put these in from the factory and what brand did they normally use? I was working on mind this weekend, the bezel was cracked, and noticed a made in Japan sticker on it. I wouldn't think that is correct.
