Had a look at the 328 SPC WP illustration and the low wrap angle around the WP idler pulley is a bit of a dodgy thing (i.e., you need really "good" frictional contact between the belt and idler to prevent slippage so needing a fresh idler pulley is probably inevitable). Same thing on the 308 AC belt system -- not the greatest design...

JRV and Steve Thanks for the replys,

Yes, I have had the intermittent squeal from my WP belt, I changed the belt as well as had my Wrench check tightness while servicing the A/C system and all was okay, so I am back to the WP tensioning pulley with the anodizing worn off causing the noise

>>(less HP loss compared to the "typical" V-belt)>>

imo the advantage is far less "heat build up" as the long expanses between pulleys require a rather tight belt to eliminate flopping, which is very stressfull and increases heat/stretch/wear.

jeff -- What's the motivation for your questions? I wouldn't say the stock WP belt/pulley systems using the Gates "7M" belts are "ruggedly over-designed", but it's not like Owner's report frequently breaking belts on healthy systems. IMO, it's the right trade-off for a high speed belt system -- i.e., a large belt V-angle to minimize "wedging" into the pulley (less HP loss compared to the "typical" V-belt) and the minimum cross-section to get the job done (minimum belt inertia for high speeds and high accelerations). Are you having a specific problem (e.g., squeaking/squealing)?

Ferrari uses High Strenght, High Performance, Cool Running Poly Flex Belts, that need a certian amount of tension to do their jod across long expanses from pulley to pulley and at high rpms.

I would not suggest changing to a less durable type belt or one not designed to handle the specific conditions and work/stress loads dictated by the Ferrari set-up.

Can you use a larger width water pump belt provided it fits the groove in the pully on the V8 engines or is their some reason Ferrari used a thin belt that rides deep in the pulley?

Thanks
