Mitchell, Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is dwell is defined as the rotational arc the distributor makes when the points are remain closed. During this period of time, the corresponding coil is charged. Varying the point gap adjusts the dwell. Closing the gap increases the dwell and conversely, opening the gap decreases dwell. A consequence of changing the dwell is ignition timing is also affected. When the points begin to separate, the ignition fires. Closing the gap, increases dwell, and also advances the ignition timing. Increasing the gap, reduces dwell and retards the ignition timing. Assuming the engine starts and idles, adjust the dwell first then the timing. |

I have come from a long line of DME cars, and frankly do not know what "dwell" angle is, what it does, what effects of wrong dwell angle is, and how to set it. Can someone enlighten me? Mitchell Thanks |
