Paul,

Can you post the part numbers and where you shopped for the compressor and the adaptor kit for mounting it? Also, did you use the stock Ferrari clutch or a different setup? I would love to talk to you about how you went about this as I am going to be tackling this over the next several weeks.

If the refrigerent drops below a certain pressure the compressor will be shut down but not for oil level.

Question about A/C: If the Compressor lubricant drops below a certain level, does the compressor shut down to prevent compressor damage? My A/C was blowing cold then the compressor made a funny sound then stopped working. Fuses are OK. Haven't checked the level yet.
Thanks

Hey, I fix one thing and another thing breaks. The good news is huge pics like Edward's below will have to be made smaller before posting. No more horizontal scroll bars!, unless you have your PC settings on a smaller resolution like 800 by 600.

see attached photo's for real.

Rob changed photo size allowed to no more than 640 x 480 and he has yet to put in a message that lets you know that your photo's are oversized.

So all those no photo posts are his fault, one more screw up like that Rob and i am going to that other site....... :-)

You're doing it the old way Paul. It's all automated now. See the "Upload Attachment" button below.

Anyway, your slant was going the wrong way too.

Let me know if anything else.

Do you know any improvement for the A/C on the 328?
Air conditioning is the only thing that does not work well in my car :-(

Paul,
Could you post some more info on your rotary compressor installation? The compressor and associated components were missing from my car when purchased so your conversion is an attractive solution.

I updated my AC to a rotary compressor (308 GTS) and there is just enough room for it to be installed properly. With the rotary update you no longer need the lower compressor mount or the belt ajustment assembly. I did however replace my AC lines because they were 20 years old and I needed to reroute them in the engine compartment to better line up and mount to rotary compressor.

The rotary compressor (new) was $315 and the off the shelf compressor mount adaptor was a $115.

The time and effort was worth it as I live in southwest Florida and I drive my car almost everyday, let alone run a York Compressor to the RPM limits of a ferrari more than a couple of times and you will have shot compressor.

I am in Gaffney which is on I-85 between Greenville SC and Charlotte NC. If you have ever been on I-85 and seen the giant Peach Watertower, that's Gaffney. It is 200 miles from Atlanta.

Ed,

Your shop is in SC? Whereabouts? Im in Atlanta, if I end up buying this or another car needing an AC overhaul perhaps I can bring it to you.

Ed,

It's good to hear that Aria Condizionata is your area of specialty. Everything works on my car. The air conditioner appears to work as the air coming out is definitely cooler than the outside air. The system needs recharging as that hasn't been done in 10 years. The previous owner used the AC on rare occasions during the past five years. I'll have it recharged in the near future. Hopefully that's all it needs.

If'n it needs more, why then I reckon I might just drive on down there and have you fix it. It's time for this Tarheel (I grew up in Edenton) to see the Carolinas again!

1 Here is what the A/C compressor system looks like. If you take it somewhere they are still going to need the parts to hook everything up.

There is a company in Atlanta that specializes in vehicle A/C systems. They do large trucks, RV's and all types of cars. I'm thinking the smartest thing would probably be to just take it to them and say: "Make it freezing in there". I bet they could mix and match parts to make things work pretty good. The only question would be how much it cost! I bet $1,500 or more..... OUCH!

A big problem would be mounting the compressor there is very limited space in the engine compartment. Under the dash is a problem as well with space. The factory system is really squeezed in there. You can actually buy the original type compressor very cheap but the clutch and pulley is unique to the Ferrari. I paid around $300.00 for my pulley as my car was in a similar condition to what you have described. I had enough parts laying around my shop to build me a good compressor and fitted a drier for a Honda Accord. I can kill a Hog in my car now.

I was kinda thinking the same. Assume everything will have to be replaced.

That being the case, I would think going with a rotary type compressor and a larger evaporator (that would still fit in the space) may increase the systems abilities and also cost less than official Ferrari parts. I would also like to increase the power of the fan to push more air.

Any ideas on how much this type of thing would cost, assuming it does need everything? If its crazy money Ill pass on the car. If its $1,500 or less, I may factor that into the negotiations/price.

The problem is that without having a closed system to test with there is no telling what condition the remaining parts of the system are in. You are going to have to be willing to commit to properly repairing the system with a blank check in order to get cold air. Air conditioning is my specialty and there are few shortcuts.

I have found a '77 GTB that I am considering for purchase. The A/C system is non-functional and the compressor is off the car. I would need A/C as in Atlanta its very hot and I want to drive the car daily.

Anyone have experience rebuilding an A/C system? Would it be better to use an aftermarket compressor? Any other upgrades that should be done when going through the system? Larger evaporator?

Should I assume all of the hoses are trash and will need replacing?

How much do you guys think it should cost to get the system restored and working properly (meaning it blows actual cold air in a volume to keep the cabin cool on a 95 degree day).

Thanks for the help!

Terry
