To be safe I would pressure test the cooling system and see what leaks you have - dont forget to check the pressure cap.

I agree with Tom and Malcolm, the weakest part of the 456 cooling system is the radiator - have you checked to see if the cooling fans are running and cutting in and out at the correct time ?

Malcolm,
Good point. Both my 308 and 328 sprung leaks about 1 to 2 weeks after having all the coolant hoses replaced...Took the 308 back, in the case of the 328, it was quicker for me to handle it...man, there are a lot of hoses and clamps on these cars! :-)

Hoses seem to be a problem too, make certain they are all clamped tight, especially for a frew weeks after fitting new ones. The radiator on early cars is a bimetal notion which tended to leak, new ones presumably better. the radiator is the lowest thing in the nose, easy to wear a hole in the bottom on slopping driveways. Mine does not overheat if everything is up to par.

Interesting...I just had a 456 brought to me for the same reason. I found the radiator is leaking in three different spots(repairable) and the auxsilery electric water pump was also leaking. This obviously resulted in low coolant in the system, thus causing the over heating problem. These cars will over heat if you get stuck in traffic for extended periods of time. Mainly because of the fact that the engine is so tighly packed in there.

Maybe a few more details about the problem would help some of our experts answer your question-
What are the conditions when you experience the problem, weather and driving? Does it happen all the time, or only under certain conditions.

Quite often the problem can be traced to something simple like air in the system, a sticking thermostat, or a faulty radiator cap.

With a few details, I'm sure someone will offer up a solution

Good Luck

I currently own a 95 456GT and just discovered overheat problem. Is it common for all 456s??? Any solution to that? Thanks for your help.
