Sorry Brucey only checking in 1x week lately. At this point I have seen a TR go 75k on first clutch, if I were you I might do it anyway. I will do mine one day (sooner or later). Resurface not replace. My 4pack exhaust doesn't have the tubes but they did break off when I removed the stock. I cut the tubes at the bases, removed the threaded connection into the cat, welded them shut, and replaced the (now closed) connector back into the cats. Tubes can then be placed (using the bolts on the clutch housing) to LOOK like they are proper. Essentailly #2 below but my tubes aren't tacked anywhere other then in my parts bin. Do they use the tubes in NJ to measure anything? if so WHY? These tubes are for analysis/mixture adjustment PRE-cat (so smog testing from here wouldn't be advised). You won't pass smog in CA with bored out cats. HTH -Ben |

I think my cats went out to the trash with the original exhaust. Hear the sound, baby, Tubi's on mine. Emissions laws suck. Lose the cats and register your car in Indiana. |

Bruce: First, I have a hollow cat on my car and it passes emissions without a single problem with lots of room to spare. Every TR owner I know has long since removed (or hollow) their cats. They are a big fire hazard and should be removed ASAP. This is especially true for the TR's. Second, I told you the cost would be $8K-$12K; not the $5K quoted. Sorry. Ken

My TR test port tubes where cracked at the bases. I removed them, and welded the holes shut.......end of problem, or any leak. If your State requires a visual inspection, then you have only 2 options: 1) Get new pipes.......seems to be a waste of money to me. 2) Remove the pipes off the base, and weld the base holes shut.....then tack-weld the pipes back in place.......they won't be functional, but at least they will look OK for inspection. I would choose option 2. |

I am pretty sure NJ still does a visual but then again some of the guys at the state inspection areas are really clueless. Maybe WWOC can do the inspection for you |

Maybe they are going to rebuild the slave cylinder while they are replacing the clutch, and maybe a new throwout bearing. Add those to the price of a clutch kit, and you are doing well at $1800. It might take an extra couple hours if they do the above work in addition to putting in new discs. I just bought a dual clutch kit for a '91 and it was AP #135076 (according to multiple sources). One thing to watch out for, the dealer might just replace the disks, and not the float plate and cover (which has finger springs, etc). That would be a ripoff. The clutch package should include 2 disks, a floater plate, and cover, plus some little pins. |

Is the clutch slipping? Ask them what the two hours are for, since they have to remove the clutch to get at the seal, and then they have to re-install it. Why 2 hours more to install the new clutch?....re-surfacing the flywheel maybe? They both would go on in the same manner. I think there is a fair amount of room for negotiaion here. |

Your only options are: either to have the dealer replace just the seal, and do the clutch later......while you save $300 on the clutch, you will pay more to tear everything apart again; or, just have the dealer to do both now.......charging only 2 hours labor now, is better than 8 hours labor later. I think that you would save more money if you had it done now. You may want to see if you can negotiate the price on the clutch with the dealer. |
