Fresh boots are cheap insurance. Replace them when you can. Also, the boots should not be filled with grease.

I dont remember any air holes in the boots? Tony Paladino of Modena Motors wrote an article in Forza about putting wire ties in the pleats. You need a special tool or lots of inventiveness to put on the bands, some people leave the little one off so pressure build up can escape. I used both and packed the joint full, but have no grease escaping. Like every other Ferrari my car has several leaks but not there.

the boots are not packed--I think that I over packed the bearings and some of the grease from the bearing area is getting into the boots.
my main question here is has anyone else had sealing issues with the boots and how was it solved.

the clamp on the big end of the boot is an odd little band but looks adjustable

You only need to pack the bearings with grease, the boots are there to collect any excess grease thown out from the bearings and to keep water out. They are not a service item, but like you have, if you remove the shafts for access for other repairs it is a good idea to inspect them for splits etc., and replace if required. You need to remove 95% of the grease you have packed into the boots.

I did not pack the boots--just loaded up the bearing area completely--the boots look fine but just do not seem to be sealing well--I am thinking that when things get hot, the grease ig slipping down into the boot area and slinging out.

I've got one half shaft slinging grease and the other does not. Both boots appear to be in the same condition- ie good with no rips tears etc. Have not touched them since I bought the car. Been wondering whether it makes sense to pull the shafts and relube. Any thoughts? How frequently does one need to mess with these. 79 308 GTS with 21k miles. Thanx Don

Pete,
I was thinking the same thing, if you have that much grease in there, you are going to stretch the boots and cause them to fail prematurely.

I recently removed my 1/2 shafts for some engine work and when I reinstalled them, I packed them FULL of grease.
Now they are slinging it everywhere. There is a very small air hole in each boot where the grease is coming out and also around the bolting area(yes-they are tight)

HAS ANYONE TRIED TO REPLACE THE BOOTS? TIGHTEN THE CLAMPS ON THEM? OR SEAL THE BOOTS IN OTHER WAYS?

I am hoping that I just over packed them ateh the excess is coming out and not ALL of it.
