Paul: What we are talking about here is a buckle that has the "safety light" wire in it. The wire is in the DRIVERS side belt, so, yes, British or Japanese belt buckles are different - err, reversed - than our normal (couldn't help but get that dig in) belts.

If you look at the picture, you are seeing it from the drivers seat. Both the drivers side and passenger side are in the picture. Notice where the male belt clip (not Shown) will latch in to the female part. The button top release the seat belt will be on the inside.

The bottom picture is just for reference that the new belts are different from the old belts. The release button was in the back. The new belts do not clip into the old female end, but the new female ends are wrong.

re:"British or any other right hand drive seat belts such as Japan..."
Yeah, but these are Italian seat belts...

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I'm having trouble visualizing what's wrong, so can't post a relevant comment.

British or any other right hand drive seat belts such as Japan etc. are identical to left hand drive seat belts. If you think about it, it doesn't change the belts, just which side the driver is sitting. Looks to me like these belts are made to come from the other side of the console or have a manufacturing error.

Steve
I might try it, I just feel awkward because I shouldn't have to modify stuff like this. Also, the wire, while it will reach, will not be in its natural position and might get kinked.

Hans
I thought about that. It wouldnt be the first time for me. I need to ask the vendor if it could be a mistake.

Thanks guys

Barney: Could you have "British" belts? I'd suppose that the wire would be for the driver's side, which would be on the right, if that's the case.

Barney,

As this is a safety issue, my advice below is at your own risk (damn lawyers make me say that).

If you insist and can not naturally reverse the assembly, install it in reverse and add a washer on the car side to make up for the possible space. A lock washer may have an additional benefit and/or use super strength Loc Tight.

The basic idea here is to INSURE a flat surface on both sides of the female seat belt assembly on the bolt and the car sides. A locking washer and/or Loc Tight insures the bolt will not work loose. Like my computers, home, etc. i am VERY anal retentive about security/safety.

Just my 2 cents.

Enjoy the Drive,

If they in fact go the other way, I will have to reverse the way the bolts came on the units, but, is there any safety concerns with that?

OK. I am replacing my seatbelts when I notice this - The seat belt release button on the new units is on the inside (between me and the console). I have never seen a car like this. My old ones had the release behind (see bottom picture) and all my other cars have the button on the other side so itis less likely to come out I guess. Is this a problem? Where are your seat belt release buttons? If I reverse the position, the wire is now on the wrong side. Anyone?
