Great deal for an such an awesome supercar but expensive to maintain
I am looking at a few 355s to replace my 456GT since it is a lot easiler to live with.
Maybe consider keeping the 456 if time and money is no issue

Looks like:
http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/266398.html has a recent thread repeating a lot of this.

I'm looking to get a '95 456 - they are a deal @70k-$75k likely through a the dealer network and even less if you go private sale. But, private sale almost scares me on a 456 because of the list oif know problems...

Yeah, seen/heard all of the stuff mentioned in the thread so far...

Top problems I've seen in my research while thinking through this stupidity of wanting to replace my 328 with a 456...

1) window regulator madness - it's an 80 hour job to replace the regulators on the windows - this is close to $10k - from what I've seen/heard it still isn't right and every 3k miles you'll end up adjusting anyway

2) rear window replacement - $6k for window cost + tech time - lots of people say they leak like a sieve

3) interior plastic around dials, etc. Basically all the stuff around the dials delaminates/bubbles/looks like crap and you have to replace the whole thing for $1700 (or if you're like me and don't give a crap about it looking 100% original, you pay $100 to a local shop and have them fab you something out of a known non=shitty material and replace it for you :-)

4) Self leveling shocks leaking (roughly $1k+ per corner)

5) Radiator is in a questionable place or something - pulling in too far in a parking space almost guarantees radiator failure eventually (slightest tap on parking curb)

6) need belt replacement every 30k or 3 years as per ferrari - hotter engine = more wear

7) expensive everything

Knowing this, I'm still looking at them.

I have a 2 year old and my wife gave up her seat in the 328 for the boy so we either take 2 cars to an italian car event or we take no italian car if we want to go as a family. I'd rather the 4 seats of the 456 and go with that.

:-)

the parts for the window repair may be 1750, but labor will be $10000 or so. The rest of the problems seem minor to me, I suppose because my car hasnt suffered from them.I would try to get a 4546M if you can do it.Having said that, I loved my '95.

have to agree with With Stephen. They seem to have alot of problems. I have a customer with one and it was just in the shop for the radiator leaking. I sent it out to a local rad shop and they repaired all the leaks. We'll see how long it lasts. I also had to replace the electric aux water pump as it sprang a leak as well. They have serous problems with the power window regulators, the head lights seem to have a mind of there own, the swicth trim panels inside the car for the power windows, the shocks leak mostly at the rear(like stephen said), the brake pads alone are almost $1000. brake rotors are also very expensive. The cars develope numerouse annoying rattles as the milage gets higher, the rear window film starts to seperate so you get that ugly white stuff around the edges of the windo. I could go on but why?

well with the dealers that I have expereince with it would seem of all the models over the past 6 years or so the 456 is one of the worst in terms of reliability.

Power steering racks go all the time, cooling system faults - mainly relating to very poor radiator design that just packs up, leaking shocks at the rear,oh! and not to mention the appalling power window mechanism thats really just a mess beaking down very often and the only way to (hopefully remedy it) is to install a retro fit kit from ferraro for $1750??

All in all a lovely car but potential for huge and never ending bills IMHO!!

Hey guys,

first post here, and a question.

A very good customer of ours is looking to get a 95 or 96 456 GT...curious to know, how troublesome are these cars? Pricing is quite low on these (60-80K range) as far as I've seen.

Thanks in advance!
