Joel, Take your car to the Ferrari Dealer or a trusted Ferrari mechanic for a "Pre-Purchase" check out inspection. My inspection was around $700, but well worth it for piece of mine (if the car is OK then you pay, if not the owner pays - deal I made). Part of the check out is a compression leak down, which should catch head gasket leak; crack in the head, etc. Good luck, Jim Hilton |

If you're buying from a showroom make a compression test part of the sale. This will prove it one way or the other. |

Quite a common problem too, here in the UK - agree with rest of posts, normally an oil and filter change will solve the problem. But as a precaution if you are thinking of buying I would have the car checked for head gasket leaks, we also see quite a few head gasket failures ! |

Check the coolant cap also, blown headgasket can cause same condition in the coolant; but I see this 'cream' in oil in air cooled cars not running long enough to reach a proper temperature. Nothing kills an engine like repeated short trips, the acids created in the oil don't burn off properly, and condensation is water which is not what you want in your oil! Oil and filter change would be first thing I would do after purchase....(IF I purchased) |

It is most probably condinsation from short tripping. If a head gasket is leaking there will be coolant as opposed to pure water in the oil. |

It is a mixture of oil and water, short trips without a chance to fully warm up can cause this among other things. Have a oil sample taken |

HI there, I'm about to buy a 456 - but one I have seen had a creamy coffee like residue on the underside of the oil cap. I heard this normally means there's a problem with the head gasget. Or - are there other possible explainations for this? (seeing it's a V12). The sales people suggested it was due to condensation build up as it had often been used for only very short journeys. It's a 94, with 37k, last service 31k, with FSH. Many thanks ! |
