I thought someone was making a kevlar clutch for the 308? What's the spec on flywheel skimming versus replacement? |

JRV, Can you suggest a better modern clutch that holds up better than stock? What's the best brand of clutch to put in a 308? Dave, nothing wrong with one manly leg and one girlie leg! Beats the hell out of two girlie legs!! Pedal effort isn't my compaint, although it is a pretty stiff clutch compared to a modern clutch (the girlie clutch in my Honda Civic for example...smooth, but not very manly!) The issue is the fact that a Honda clutch can easily go 100,000 miles (I have 198,000 on my Civic clutch) but the 308 wears out in 10K-30K on average. Seems like there must be a better answer, its not like the 308 is a particularly powerful car or anything. Jonathan |

I agree totally with JRV.... Heck, if the clutch in my Daytona were to go out, Im not sure I would replace it with a factory Daytona clutch! First I would investigate more modern upgrade possibilities. |

What! - only 36K miles. I hope mine lasts longer, especially since I now have 34K miles and the car is finally running well. I've never worn out a clutch except when I broke a few when I was a teenager but I learned the error of my ways after seeing what dumping the clutch did to the springs in the clutch plate and the pressure plates. I hope the Ferrari assemblies are stronger. I'm very easy on clutches now, I hope mine will last a while. BTW, are there any special issues I should be concerned with. Is the pilot bearings strong in the 308 motors? Throughout bearings ok. Is it just the clutch linings that tend to wear? Thanks everyone - Joe 85 Mondial QV |

My previous clutch in my 308QV lasted 36K miles... just changed it out a couple of months ago. |

>>What's wrong with having one girlie leg and one manly leg? << and for those of you that don't know...the above is no joke!! That's why I think this is so funny. Yes a Daytona clutch fits...and Yes it's a No No because it's an absolutely horrible mod that has no overiding reasons at all with so many better mods/choices/options availible. There is nothing about clutches designed 30-40 yrs ago that can match modern designs. If ya just have to live for nostalgia put some Daytona Plugs in the engine!! { } |

What's wrong with having one girlie leg and one manly leg? Jonathan, I have known a few people that used the Daytona clutch in a 308... But, of those that used the 308 on the street in normal driving, all changed back to a stock clutch. If you have the horsepower that you are blowing clutches then it would be a great upgrade, but if your 77 308 is stock at around 179rwhp then why go to the trouble. If your pedal effort is very high, I might suggest lubing the cable path, it will be like night and day. |

>> I mostly use the car for track days and to race in the Ferrari Formula Classic<< LOL 20 years ago when that "tip" was written when other replacements didn't exist. They do now though! I haven't heard of anyone bothering with a Daytona clutch in a 308 in yrs and yrs and yrs...with so many better modern choices.

It's a well known no no? Why? You see, I have a Daytona clutch fitted to my 308QV. I mostly use the car for track days and to race in the Ferrari Formula Classic. My standard 308 clutch was constantly wearing and slipping eventually.

Yes this is a well known No No. Like many other things in OZ, it sounds good, until you pull back the curtian. The 308 clutches don't hold up well only if they are constantly slipped feeling like an automatic when taking off and/or refuse to adjust them as they wear. |

Hi Everyone, Following up on this clutch issue, I read something the other night that I thought I would ask about. I have a copy of a book called The Complete Guide to the Ferrari 308 Series by Wallace Wyss (Motorbooks international 1982). In it, there is a blurb about how the 308 clutches don't seem to hold up well. He comments that while a clutch can last as long as 14,000 miles or more (imagine that!) he has seen some last only 4,000 miles when abused. "One solution," he writes, "is to install a heavy-duty clutch from a Daytona. This lasts longer, especially if the car is to be used for racing but also adds tremendously to the pedal effort." Just imagine this thing with MORE pedal effort! ;-) Nonetheless, anyone ever heard of such a thing, putting a Daytona clutch in a 308? Jonathan
