The factory seals are white hard plastic looking material - teflon. The bmw seals look like green soft rubber with a spring surrounding the lip seal around the valve stem and a hard steel insert coated inside with rubber to grip the guide. They fit right on. Ive gone 13000kms so far and no problems. They may increase guide wear but all that oil leaking past the original seals doesnt seem to prevent it. Only time will tell but they wont have any negative impact on the seats. That odd puff of oil also causes carbon build up on the back side of the valves affecting AFR and HP not to mention the original ones are outdated technology. |

OK but my question is....does anyone know if the valves seals from Superperformace specifically are good or not. I have no means of determining what kind of material they are made from. |

Efficient valve guide seals can give improved oil consumption and better HC emissions, but also increased valve guide and valve seat wear. I have no idea if the 308 valve guides are susceptable to this (like the 355 ?) but it might be worth looking into. Personally I'd rather have some lubricating oil consumption and even the odd puff of smoke, rather than valve guide wear. Just my .02 ......... |

Newman, do you have to remachine the valve guides for the 85 M5 seals to fit or are they a direct replacement. I had my cylinder head rebuilt, but they used the stock teflon seals. Thanks! |

I wouldnt use the teflon original ones, go with a soft viton seal like the M5. They also go on easier and you wont nick the seal with the valve lock groove using the viton ones. Im running them in my 308 and I dont have any noticable oil consumption between 4000km oil changes and my car sees daily use. |
