If you lose an entire bank, the problem is most likely to be one of the crank sensors.

There are three around the flywheel and they should have a resistance of around 700-1200 ohms to work correctly.

There is one for TDC on each bank and one for speed. Any of them could be your problem.

Their connections go bad and/or their resistance goes too high. Use an ohm meter on the sensors directly, if it reads ok, then measure the resistance at their connections to the ECU.

Plug leads and dist caps ususally only effect single cylinders under high throttle loadings if they're getting bad.

I had a very similar problem just after I bought my Mondial. The thing I noticed when it went off on one bank was the rev counter stopped working.(front bank I think) I spent many hours messing and finally I had the answer, one of the magnetic senors that switches from the flywheel had failed. There are three on the car, two for the timing of each bank and a TDC sensor. On mine one of the timing sensors failed.
To check if this is the problem, see which bank is going off then swop the connections on the ignition modules, if the other bank goes off, thats your problem. They are pretty cheap, mine came from a Lancia!

Christopher...Tom & David are right on track. Both times my Ferrari V8 has turned into a straight 4 has been because of loose or slightly corroded connections to the coil. Pull the main wire to each coil, clean the plastic and rubber mating surfaces, clean the copper connectors real good, widen the connectors so that a real tight connection is made and fire her up. Check all of the other connections to the coils (if your car is a Euro) and clean & tighten those as well.

Christopher,

Personally, I start by inspecting the cap and rotor for the "suspected" bank...

Also, the connections from the new coil/ignition module to the cap would be suspect (coil wire).

After these areas are known to be good, Then we'll go from there.

Regards,
David

Hello, I have a 1986 Mondial and it is running on four cylinders! Sometimes it runs on all eight, but if you drive it for a while it will fell like its bogging down, and then it will only be running on four cylinders. The other night it was running good so I went out and drove it, I noticed when I would go over bumps in the road it felt like it would misfire a little bit. Then all the sudden it loss lots of power and started backfiring! I coasted home and let it sit for an hour and started it up and it was fine. Sense then it been doing the same thing it always has. You start it, if your lucky it will be running on all eight, if your not it will be running on four. I have found that the coil closest to the rear of the car is the one that turns off when the car is running bad. I replaced that coil and module with a new one from Ferrari, No luck. Any ideas? I'm really frustrated. Thanks!!
