Verell, I, too, had to split the ring. I soldered back and it is holding...

Thanx! That trick with the RTV should do it. I've got some RTV that I make unobtainium molds out of. It's softer & tougher than regular RTV, so it should both seal better & be less likely to tear. I agree, it's almost impossible to hold the tank while working on the pump. PITA big time! Best I ever came up with was a ~19mm socket inside the tank with a flex on the end of a 3/8" breaker bar. Never could get enough force on to really tighten the push nut down good. Your suggestin sounds like it'll let me do that! I may have to make a new brass 'push nut' as I think mine may be split. Hmm, guess I could try brazeing it back together tho. You're welcome(re:...posts...). |

Verell, I have had success in repairing the very same thing. It took, however, 2 attempts as I realized that this task was a bit more difficult that I have imagined. About the rubber seal. The old one I had was to brittle for reuse and also too hard. I was able to make a new seal with High Temp RTV silicone, by spreading a generous amount on the nipple and then pushing on it with the old seal and then cleaning the edges neatly.(the old seal and the nipple will guide your finger) As you know, the RTV sealant will NOT stick to the nipple nor to the old seal so you can leave it there to dry. After a day it should be dry. The RTV sealant is a lot softer (and thus more compressible)so it will be more forgiving later. Remove and discard the old seal. Take the " push-nut" off and sand the inside edge a bit (to make the "teeth" a bit sharper). Using a vise, gently flatten the push nut a little, in order to reduce the inside diameter. Now you should have a push nut that can withstand a strong hold on the inside plastic nipple of the pump. Take a large box-end wrench and spray it with a veil of 3M 77 adhesive (or any other stuff to hold the push-nut on the wrench, to position it over the nipple. By now you already know that is is practically impossible to hold the tank in any way: shape and the slipperiest plastic under the sun. Ok, just grasp the motor and, using the neck of the tank, start the push-nut on the nipple. (Do not forget the "new" seal you made). This may be a bit hard (because we made the nut ID smaller) but you only want to start it just a bit as it is impossible (by yourself)to hold the tank and really put enough leverage on the wrench while, also, holding the motor/pump tight against the outside of the tank. Select a socket that will can put a nice pressure on the push-nut, that will clear the nipple and that will fit nicely in the rounded bottom of the tank and drop it in the tank in position... Now take a long (and I mean long) steel pipe that will fit behind the socket and wedge it somewhere (used the legs of my work bench) so that a long portion extends out. fit the tank over it and now, push on the motor like a mad man and the push-nut WILL slip on the shaft, the new seal WILL compress nicely and the push-nut WILL hold the the grip. The design of the tank sucks immensly but the above will work. This thing had me pissed so much it had become personal. By the way, I always follow your posts with great interest as I admire you pragmatical approach to keep these cars in shape. You actually are my Ferrari Chat hero! Thanks for the many great posts. SEALING 308 WIPER PUMP-RESERVOIR JOIN The wiper pump failed on my 308 a few years back. I was lucky enough to find a NOS reservoir for something w/a 1" taller reservoir. Switched the pump out. The pump body was held in place by a split brass ring that acted as a 1-way nut. I've re-used the ring, but have never been able to clamp the rubber washer tight enough to get a good seal. I can get RTV to hold for a while, but not permanantly. Any suggestions as to how to get a permanant seal? Real PITA as I was using RainX washer solution. Didn't see it dripping until I had about 1/3 of the inside of my spare stained purple. Guess what won't come off! Called RainX & was told to use mineral spirits & 'it'll come right off'. BULLS#%$. Soaked it for 2 days & only lightened the shade a bit. However, the real problem is the water pump I can't seal. Once I seal it, I'll strip & repaint the spare.

Dave, Thanks for the help. I'll have to look at it very closely this evening to figure out what's been put in there previously. TWS |

Dave - is it the black cap on the passenger side along the fender just in front of the spare tire? If so, based on the whiteish slimey crud inside my cap, I wonder what the heck the PO dumped in there. Thanks. TWS |

On the 87 it is on the right front under the front bonnet/hood. Has a black plastic snap-on top....yours should be similar. |

Its been about six weeks since I received my 1988 328 GTS, and I can't seem to find the windshield washer reservoir. I was feeling pretty foolish about not being able to find it until asking a fellow owner who didn't know where it was either. Can anyone help out here? There are at least two owners who would be very grateful. TWS |
