Darren,

Jack the car up
hold the wheel with both hands and try to rock it backwards and forwards, and see how much play, repeat this with your hands at the top and bottom as well as either side of the wheel
also rotate the wheel and listen carefully for any strange noises
whilst the car is up in the air check for any loose hoses or cables, Ive had a similar noise on my 400 spent ages trying to work it out then found it was a loose cable (doh!)
if you take the wheels off when you do this you could look for any obvious marking on the components

Good luck

Thanks for the reply's, the car's booked in for the clutch at the end of the month. As for the squeaking wheels i dont think its the wear indicators as i checked out the pads (front anyway) not long ago and they had loads of wear left on them. i guess i could check out the back ones but i dont think this is the issue, any other ideas?

Just had my stepson ask this question about the clutch in his Nissan. THE NEXT DAY, he was driving up an incline on the freeway and his clutch went out completely - the car would not move at all and had to be towed. The clutch had no remaining friction material on the flywheel side, I can't imagine how it made it as far as it did!

In my experience I'd say its impossible to guess how long a slipping clutch will last. It depends on how the car is driven, make of clutch, make of car, type of driving (e.g. stop-start or cruising), etc etc.

You could find you only get around the next corner before it goes or you could be very lucky and get 500 or even 1,000 miles.

How long would one last at the start of slipping provided that you baby it? Just curious as my clutch in my 66 Pontiac is on the way out.

When you press the accelorator while you are in third gear do the revs increase rapidly without any great increase in vehicle speed?

If so, that sounds like a slipping clutch which is usually indicative of a clutch that is on the way out. You normally won't have many miles left before it stops working completely.

Good luck.

Justyn.

Sometimes break pads have wear indicators that squeak when the pads run low. Look to see if there are little metal 'tabs' touching the rotors.

Yes, it could be your clutch.

Hello, after comming back from Le Mans in June my wheels started to squeak as they turned, mainly when turning left. They have sice got worse and squeak all the time! has anyone any ideas as to what this may be?
Also when in gear (mainly 3rd 4th 5th) and i put my foot hard on the acelerator the rev's spin up and then come back down to the expected level. I'm assuming i need a new clutch, is this correct? thanks.
