Disclaimer: This is how I did it... not a professionally trained mechanic. I'm lazy.

I recently had to change my oil sending unit on my '79 308GTS, and its not really straightforward. It would appear you need to remove the entire little oil filter/sending units assembly, which may require removing the airbox. I just had to find a way to replace it w/o removing even the oil filter. Here it is.

Step 1: Obtain new sending unit before starting. Also by a 15/16" (or metric) crowfoot wrench, $7.99 at Sears.

Step 2: Make sure its the same as the oil one visually.

Step 3: Drive screwdriver through the oil one just like you did on your Dad's Olds 98's oil filter, and remove it. The reason is the sending unit's cover spins freely, and its hard to reach the nut behind it with a wrench.

Step 4: Remove Ferrari factory coupling, as the new replacement is threaded size of hole sans coupling.

Step 5: Label and store coupling, as I'm sure the next sending unit purchased will be back to the little hole in the coupling.

Step 6: Put on whatever oil-proof sealant you like on the threads of the new sending unit.

Step 7: Hand screw sending unit as far as you can.

Step 8: Take your choice of sanding disk/sander to the crowfoot wrench and remove all metal you can from it and still believe it will have strength to turn the sending unit...

Step 9: Use crowfoot wrench, 4 inch extension bar, and ratchet to tighten up. You took off all the metal because otherwise it would not have fit in the italian designed unapproachable space!

Step 10: Test for leaks.
