Hey Guys, I just spoke with previous owner and it is a flywheel problem. He has been away so I couldn't speak to him before. Just like you guys said, it needs repacking. About 250gr if I remember from previous posts. Thanks once again for all your info as this site surely does make it a lot easier for F-car owners. Marc |

I agree Vince! I think he has a flywheel issue. Marc, many of us have been through this exact problem. If you start to notice the engine becomes more difficult to start, then you will know for sure. Good luck! |

Marc, Mention it to him and find out how much it would be to repack the FW. You may have a little oil from the Gerabox sliding past the shaft, or brake fluid sliding past the seal on the throw out bearing. The noise you're describing those sound like the FW issue, IMO. Keep us posted. Vincent. |

Paul, The shifter knob and gate look kewl. I regularly fly into London so is it possible to have one delivered to a London address ? how does it work for VAT if I'm taking it out of the country? Marc |

Hey Vincent, Followed everyone's advice and had a look at the inspection plate and it had a slight cover of oil and road grit (not much though). I have booked in to see the mechanics this week so I'll mention it to him. As for the light switch, well I'll have to keep looking around for a new complete set as thats how it comes. The shift gate reverse lock has worn so i had a look at Hill's Eng and they look pretty awesome, so i might have to order one. Marc |

The amount of people who call me and tell me that when they put the shift gate on they can no longer get the car in reverse! - (Never realising before that you had to push the stick down to get into reverse!!) Here is an article that Gareth Hughes kindly submitted to the Essex Area Ferrari Owners club Newsletter regarding the shift gate. http://www.hill-engineering.co.uk/ferrari-slickshiftgatereview.htm

Marc: About your other problems: If the headlight stalk/knob rotates past the "lights on" position, something isn't right, but if the lights work OK, it wouldn't require immediate attention. I think I read somewhere that the switch is a Fiat part, but Ferrari would never admit that! About your shifter, look at the picture in http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/251280/187459.html You may be able to tell if your gate is worn, or possibly installed backwards? |

Might be a good idea to check the inspection plate on the underside of the clutch housing and see if there is any sign of fluid leakage or grease buildup down there. Look for the plate with lots of holes in it. If there is fluid or grease around it, it's pretty likely that you have a flywheel problem as Vincent suggests. |

Vincent, i have a couple of other cosmetic problems that need fixing. i) the main headlight switch when you rotate to parkers, then headlights, you can keep rotating the selector without it stopping ?? ii) i can slide from first to reverse as the shift gate lock is worn, can i unscrew this gate and weld an extra bit on. where about are you located ? |

Marc, If the motor turns over fine but you do hear a clanging sound then it most likely is the FW. Let's let a few more people comment before we jump to any conclusions. Especially since, the FW problem seems to be one that is related to hot starts, there is a chance that it is something else. But it would be good place to start. Vincent. |

Vincent I must say that the Italian Heritage was always dragging me in but the fact that it was easier for maintenance and parts on the porsche. I have had quite a look on the past threads and found the info but being where i am makes it hard to do the work myself so i'll have to get someone to do it for me. Can i definetly wipe out the starter motor then and get them to focus on the flywheel. |

Marc, I had a similar problem. It started out mild and got progressively worse, but all I needed to do was repack the FW grease and no more problem. If you do a search for 348 hot start the thread will come up. It is quite long and has a lot of good info. What made you finnaly decide to take the plunge? Good choice. Vincent. |

Hey Vincent thanks for the welcome and it rides well. I have only had it for a couple of months and drive it often. I should have bought one years ago but was put off by everyone who did'nt own one, so i opted to by a Porsche. Thats gone and now I have this baby. The sound is like a clunking noise and it happens both cold & hot. It seems to take a bit more when its hot though. Marc |

if the car turns over fine it does sound like you may need to repack your flywheel. Interesting that it starts pretty quickly, one of the clues to needing new FW grease is that the car takes a bit of cranking to start. Does it happen when the car is cold or hot or both? Do you hear the noise on shutdown as well? Vincent. |

Hey all, Need help as when I start my car I hear a loud clapping noise. Once its started noise is gone. The start is pretty quick with no excessive motoring. Been to see the mechanics and all they say (worst case scenario) is its either the flywheel or starter motor. Comments please would be great!!! |
