Henry - another option is to add a manual switch under the dash. You can either run wires to the thermoswitch at the bottom of the radiator or run wires to the relay board. In either case, add two-into-one connector tabs (easily purchased at any car parts store) and run two additional wires to a switch under the dash. This will allow you to turn the fans on at any time. There is a "hysteresis" designed into the switch. The fans go on at a higher temperature than when they shut off.

<<The dealer may not have the lower temp unit(180f).<<

Agree, ...it's an aftermarket part.

>>Some argue the lower temp makes the fans work a lot more<<

fans are cheaper to replace than engines. Heat Kills Engines.

Things are going to go bad, it's far cheaper to sacrifice thngs like fans to protect things like engines.

Anyone that can't afford to buy fans , has no business owning a Ferrari.

The dealer may not have the lower temp unit(180f)...only the stock higher one(197f). Depends on what you want. Ask first. Some argue the lower temp makes the fans work a lot more..but it should lower your water temps a
bit. Most independant VW shops only stock the lower temp units...

Thanks Dave. I'm obviously on the wrong web page. I will go to the local VW dealer tomorrow and see if they have that part # in stock.

Ah Henry,
It's right there plain as day, "308 Parts Cross Reference"...but since you need help, I scrolled down and found it. Automotive Performance Systems, 805.388.7171 Part #8.124.22 VW thermo switch 180 degree F.

Dave: I don't see a parts and service section. How about a part number?

If you go to the "parts & service" section of this website, there is a 308 cross reference list. You will find a source for the similar VW water temp switch, also in the lower temp setting for around $15, gotta be cheaper than the Porsche equivalent...I'm sure they are identical. Yes?

>> I jumped the lower thermal fan switch, turned on the ignition and WOW.....all 3 fans worked.<<

Since the old temp sw. is bad might as well put a 2 prong Low Temp Fan SW. in while you're at it.

Performance Products...2 Prong Low Temp Sw. early 944 Porsche.

Comes on 10-15 degrees sooner (around 85C).

Now THIS is what I call Easy Access!!!!!! It appears that one has to remove the lower bumper to gain access to the following:

Radiator, especially the lower part
A/C Condenser
Horns, and compressor
Blower fans.....one on each side
Blower filters
Lower screws that hold the fans in place

While you are at it, check to make sure the A/C water drain is long enough......mine isn't......some rust in the area as a result. I will add an elbow with an extra length hose to drain the water OUTSIDE the car frame.

BTW: I jumped the lower thermal fan switch, turned on the ignition and WOW.....all 3 fans worked......thanks JRV.

JRV: I'm wrong......headlight stays with the bottom of the car, not the hood......I was thinking of the turn signal light, and got confused.

Just reflected the black cover.......NO access to the radiator......there is a frame member, and other parts in the way.

It seems the lower bumper must come off!!!!!

JRV: Are you referring to the black, flat, shield? It is off to the side and behind the radiator. The sensor is in front of the radiator.

JRV: This is the Boxer......headlight stays with the hood. The bottom of the radiator is the lowest part in the front of the car.

Can't you pull the plastic shield by the headlight bucket and reach down in?

I am trying to get to the coolant switch, located on the lower left hand side of the radiator.....but how????????

There is no access from the bottom. There might be some from the front, if the grill is removed......tricky screws on the bottom portion of the grill.....very recessed.

Or does one have to remove the whole front lower bumper? This would provide the greatest access.

James: I thought I had a wire "missing". Thanks.

JRV: I will try your suggestion. If it works, then I will order a new switch. Thanks.

Henry - I have reviewed the schematic for the Boxer. It appears that all three fans should activate when the thermostatic control switch closes. The right-hand fan can be activated independently with the air conditioning control circuit.

The right-hand fan fuse (2nd from the right) does not have a connector on the top. It has a copper bus behind it.

Hope this helps.

The radiator temp switch (thermal fan sw.) controls all 3 fans with AC off.

Disconect 2 wires from TFS and jumper together...all fans should come on.

It appears that my fans don't work. I drove the car today, and the temp climbed to 100 C......normally the temp stays around 90 C. When I got home, with the engine shut down, then put the ignition on.......no fans (temp at 100 C).

Before I start working on the electrical issues, I would like to confirm a few things (car is an 83 BBi):

There are 3 fans; left (black), center (smaller yellow bladed), and right (also black...passenger side).

When the A/C is on, the right fans goes on, as expected. I believe that this fan is completely delegated to the A/C......or does it go on with the other fans, even if the A/C is off?

Does the coolant temp switch control both left and center fans? Or, when the temp gets high enough, both fans go on! Is there any time when only one of these go on?

Looking at my fuse panel, I notice that there is no top connection to the fuse of the center fan....2nd fuse from the right side.....in the glove box. Is there some internal connection I can't see?

Thanks
