Hi Tim, Dave,

Well, I managed to do it no problem. But it was time consuming and you have to be very careful. It took me about 4 hours to do the tachometer and the speedo. However, it was well worth it, they really look like new. The job concisted of very carefully levering the bezel off from the back, cleaning the glass and then carefully crimping the bezel back on. it's that simple, ut you need to be carefull, the glass really is glass! Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Tim, no, I am in the middle of a protracted engine rebuild, hopefully have it finished soon. Have fun!

Carl.

G'day Carl, I'm about to remove all my instruments for cleaning and to get the odo fixed. I'll be giving them all to Olympic instuments in Sydney, who I'm told do an excellent job for about $30 per instrument, I think. Let me know if you want more info.

BTW are you going to Adelaide for the Ferrari rally next month?

Mitchell: "...wear gloves when you put it back so you don't put your finger print on the inside..."

That is most definitely important! Nothing would be more frustrating than to do all that work and have a big ol' greasy fingerprint on the back of the lens. Would make one smash their head against the wall...

Be very careful, but it is doable. Place it upside down on a flat surface with a thick towel as cushion. Use a small flat screwdriver/pick to slightly bend up the edges around the instrument face. Don't force it, do it with just enough force and just enough to bend it. One you get it bent up around 1/2 of the circle, it will wiggle itself out.

Clean it, wear gloves when you put it back so you don't put your finger print on the inside.

Carefully push the silver ring back down with screwdriver and pliers. Be very careful, use just enough force.

Don't brake the casing or the bezel.

Carl,
I don't know what tools are required, but indeed, it looks like a very delicate job, best performed by someone with more skill than me. Over the course of two Ferraris, I have sent my Veglia clocks in for repairs three times (and tach once, most recently)...each time I look at that bezel, thinking I will "take a peek" first and see if I can fix it...but after a couple minutes I come to my senses and pack it up and mail it to the speedo shop....When they are returned, you can see where they carefully pried at the edges to removed the bezel and replace it....

BTW, welcome to Ferrarichat, I came across your "service procedures" 3+ years ago, when I first got my 78 308 GTS and found them very helpful and informative....only wish I still had that car!

It can be removed, but it's a very delicate procedure. It is very easy to crack the small, thin platic rim around the housing and the plastic chrome-like ring that hold the glass in place is very fragile as well.

I did it to my speedo but it doesn't look like it did before and if you're a real perfectionist, like I am, you might end up wishing you hadn't tried it.

However, if it's foggy, then I guess it can't look all that much worse. Last result, if you really hate the way it looks, is to buy a new one - which is what I ended up doing.

Good luck.

Is it possible to remove the bezel and glass from the Veglia tachometer and speedometer from a 308 series car? I have removed the instruments to clean behind the glass which is quite foggy but I can't see how to remove the glass, assuming it can be removed of course. The chrome bezel appears to be pressed on and I'd hate to break it levering it off. Any ideas?

Regards,

Carl.
