20 hours TOPS for removal and reinstall the engine. The rest is the breakdown of the gear box and parts.
(amazing the price of a synchro ring - probably $3 to make it). I Agree with Malcolm, do not drive like this or else the price is going to go way up when you get to it.

In the UK the repair time, depending what needs to be done inside the box is about 45 hours. DONOT drive the car with broken "bits" floating around inside the geagbox - you will end up causing more damage that you already have. Depending on what parts are required your mechanic's estimate won't be far off, (what is his hourly rate?)

Tom B is on the money. When the box is apart have them check other synchros (easy to measure wear) and only replace the bad synchro's. The sync's themselves are about $350 each. The whole job should be about $3500 unless............... you are willing to pull the motor and tranny yourself and bring them the transmission. Then you are looking at a LOT less. This price includes all the fluids that are lost, seals, gaskets, etc etc. $17k is an insane price.

Reasons enough to start working on your car. But then ... when I got to the part where this is a TR, well then, ... they figured you obviously are rich enough to get the $17K bill.

It cost me 17K for new synchros, gearbox case, second, third, and fifth gears, bearings, o-rings, ring nuts, roller races, seals, gaskets, cv boots, new timing belts and tensioner bearings, thrust washers, axle bearings, synchro hub, recharge air, fix all leaks, replace fluids and other misc. parts and re-paint front spoiler and rear valance work on my Testarossa.

Sometime breaking off a tooth looks worse than it really is. I forget the layout of the 308 gearbox but I could figure it out if someone sens me the exploded parts diagrams. Sometimes the shift forks are the issue not the gear when there is jamming. The forks work on bellcranks and a piece of metal will jam one of these. Sometimes you can feel along a shift fork/rod pathway though the inspection plates and clear this metal and voila you can shift again.

Phil, Tom also repairs ferraris for a living and when I did my gearbox rebuild this past winter, I didnt seperate the engine from the box, just tilted it on an angle to access the guts.

Your labour figures are way way way off.

It takes about 4-5 hours to get the engine out. You then still have to separate the engine/box, clean up all the gasket surfaces etc. Then strip the box, clean the parts and check the new parts. Put it all together, re-join the engine to box and re-install (about 10 hours by the time all fluid levels are set, and panels re-fitted etc.)

The total labour would be about 40-60 hours in my experience.

5 to 7 grand seems kinda high to me. To remove and install the engine takes about a days worth of labour. To replace the sycro another days worth of work. So you have approx 16hrs in labour o.k lets say 20hrs to be fair. At 100 bucks an hour thats $2000 in labour. If he is going to replace all the syncros you might be close to or over the 5 grand mark. If he is just going to replace the one sycro then really it's a 3500 to 4000 dollar job.

I am a member of FCA and I will talk to some of the other members. I just wanted to know if my mechanic's estimate of $5K to $7K seemed high to you at first blush. Thanks.

I would call around to other shops in the area. Are you a member of FCA? Asking other members in your area for recommendations would be a good idea.

Get it done ASAP, since those "pieces in the sump" don't wreck your other gears.

A tooth broke off the 5th gear synchro. Some pieces in the sump, and the gear is jammed, probably with more pieces. My mechanic says it's alright to drive in 1st to fourth, but that he needs to drop the motor at some point and replace the synchro - says it's a $5k to $7k job. Any counsel would be greatly appreciated. I live in L.A.
