Al, I get the singing occasionally. Since it was the same sound as during start-up, I figured it was the duct vibrating again (must be the frequency of the pulsations of pumping oil flowing through the cooler, that causes the vibration. I can't see any other outside influence since the whole unit [duct & cooler] is rubber mounted).

Thanks for the replies fellas. The last time I fired it up I stuck my head out and listened and it sure seemed loud by the oil cooler intake duct, hence Peter's post. I'll try pushing it next time.
Haven't detected a "singing" after it gets warm at 3K.

I experience the same sound.

I traced down the sound to the sheetmetal of the oil-cooler duct vibrating. Pushed it with my finger and the noise would go away. I've run different types and weights of oil and it did nothing to change the noise (not that I was doing that for that purpose. 20/50W Mineral to 5/50W Synthetic).

Nothing to worry about.

Al,
does your oil cooler 'sing' when the engine is up to temperature at around 3000 rpm?
I get this sort of groan from my cooler and have been told by my local specialist that its nothing to worry about. Apparently, the degree of groan and 'singing' can vary depending on the grade of oil used. I currently use 15/50 being in England where the climate is distincly colder than USA. However, during my next service, I'm going on to 20/50. This should reduce the noise.
Hope this helps.

You are low on oil.

When I start the car after it has sat for a while (couple of days, a week, etc, but not after 8-10 hours or so, yeah, I know I should be driving it more) I get a loud "groan" that sounds like it comes from the oil cooler inlet. Ring any bells or any ideas?
