Okay - I finally got under the car. Removed the wheels and found nothing out of the ordinary. Replaced and retorqued and the growl is gone. ANd has stayed gone for about a week now. I'm hoping the wheel was loose a bit but I will keep a close watch. Thanks for all the advice! |

James - Sound advice - I would hate to think I'm losing a trans with only 26K miles on it. I'm going to put the car up and look around a bit. Ernest. |

Ernest For the last time. Don't drive this car. Flatbed it to a service center. Will H and I have both replaced TR boxes. Mine went at 100K miles. A growl turns into a bang very quickly. You'll recognize it by the smell of the trans fulid buring as it sprays through the side of the box onto the exhaust. Next you'll note the sharp spin you'll go into as the rear wheel slips on the fluid. If you're going fast enough you'll look like Rubens did today at the GP as a trans bearing let go and his entire rear wheel ripped off and he, unlike you who will no longer have brakes, was able to crash into the tire barrier at a speed that did not kill him. (You may hit something harder than a tire barrier.) As Clint said: "Feeling Lucky?" |

Does it only happen when in motion (indicating as others have suggested, a rotational component) or at idle too suggesting something exhaust related? |

Ernest - do you notice the noise when slowly accelerating from a stop in a straight line, or when you are making a slight turn? If the noise is accentuated by minimal acceleration from a stop when the wheel is turned, and not present when the steering wheel is straight, then it is likely the limited slip differential clutch plates. The good news is that this may be a minor problem with easy fix. The bad news is that it does not sound, from your description, as though this is your problem. Jim S. |

What year...knock off wheels will do that when they are slightly loose. |

Mr. G is right... TR noises are not funny noises most of the time. Could be a stub axle bearing...but history has proven that niether small problems nor large ones fix themselves by refusing to get them looked at. |

Stop Driving it! Your trans may be about to explode. It can be 10K+ to fix it if it does. GET IT CHECKED OUT! |

Here's a message I hoped to never post. I'm getting a low growl, not real loud from what sounds like the right (passenger) rear of my TR. It's louder with the window down (duh) and it's only quiet enough in the cabin to hear it at city driving speeds. Going by a building makes it louder due to echo. Braking doesn't make it go away, a slight letting up on the accelerator does. Applying pressure and it's back. From my Pantera days - I'm guessing rear axle bearing. I would like to know your thoughts and what I'm in for. THANKS Ernest Riggen |
