A new engine for $15,000.00 does sound like the best deal. Is this just one motor he happens to have and wants to sell, or can they be found for this anytime?

Neal, how did you loose oil pressure?

Ted Rutland(770.493.8852) has a good used 348 block for $2600.00. He has a complete new engine(block/heads/FI/everything) in the crate for $15,000.00. IMHO, unless you're going to reassemble the engine yourself, I would go with the new engine. I suspect that the labor alone to reassemble the engine would be close to the cost to buy a new engine with 0 miles. In fact, at only $15k for a new engine, us 348 owners may be better off to never service our engines and just replace it when the cam belt breaks. That would be cheaper than paying $5k and up to have it replaced every 15k miles since it propbably wouldn't break until over 50k miles anyway !

David F.

Actually, the only wrong with the case is the studs coming out of the aluminum case. This problem is famous among Porsche owners and is very effectively solved by Timeserts. It actually make the case stronger with the timeserts. I therefore would not hesitate at all about putting timeserts in the case.

The only thing left is, I gotta find some caps, or have new ones made up.

Mitch,
For my money, and real piece of mind...I'd replace the block. The idea of using "timeserts", aka peudo helicoils on the main bearing caps makes me very uncomfortable. All that you state that is wrong with this block I guess, could be repaired....but, I strongly doubt the block would have the same mechanical and structural integrity as a new block (as it should).

FWIW...my 2 cents.

Well,

Mitchell just found out he had more problem than that. The heat generated by the lack of lubrication did the following damages to my case:

1. 3 main bearing eaten alive, all must be replaced
2. Thrust bearing shot and need new ones
3. Crank shaft scored and bent (0.020" run out), needs to be straightened, ground for undesize bearings, and nitrided.
4. 6 out of 10 main bearing studs pull out of the case (I am not sure if these were not there before) Will need to be at least Timeserted.
5. 3 bearing caps shrunk sideways and need to be replaced.

So, I am now contemplating the following options:

1. Get a set (or 3 of 5) bearing caps and hone them for the old block.
2. Or, get a new/used/rebuildable 308 block.

So, does anybody have a set of main bearing caps for cheap? Or, a case without piston or crankshaft for a decent price?

I am in this deep, I intend to finish with a freshly rebuilt and bulletproof engine I can count on for a while.

Have you been able to figure out why you lost the oil pressure in the first place ? And, TRutlands does have a few 348 engines. In fact, a few months ago he had a new one from the factory still in the crate for around $14,000.00 I believe.

Your block can be welded and align bored to standard size. Mitchell had the same problem with his 308 and it is being repaired.

1 of the crankcase bores on the block is scored badly. does anyone know if it can be re bored to a larger diameter and then insert a custom sleeve to bring it back to the right size.
