But does it vary in different gears and neutral? It goes to 7k with no probs in all gears, only in neutral does it have problems above 5k. Would someone test it in their car?

Ed's right, the stock tach is probably slow. They are on most cars.

Well the springs are good for 8500rpms so I wouldn't see it really dropping in power til there. Edward's point is golden though, like every one of them is off. I just replaced all three of my sensors (one is for the tach, one for each bank at TDC). They're like $75 a piece I think, Magneti Marelli pieces.

Don't trust a 328 tach accuracy as I have seen too many of them read slow.

In neutral the thing should go through the roof like instantly. It's not really good to rev a car in neutral though (or with the clutch depressed) so I wouldn't make a habit of it. Interesting though if it really wont go above it easily, a sign of a problem from what I know about this stuff.

After my car warmed up today I was playing with reving it high to see if I could feel or hear the problem that showed up on the dyno above 7200 RPM. I also was going to try this in neutral but I noticed the car will only do 5k or so in neutral. Is this normal? Maybe it will go higher and I just wimped out at the high sound, but I swear she was struggling to get above 5k.
