I saw cams being changed on a 360 Spider, thru the pax compartment. Not a pretty sight. First the entire top mechanism has to be taken off and then some major surgeries thru electronics and other things to clear access to the front of the motor. I would imagine it is simpler to remove engine.

I generally try and keep all the grease from my car out of the inside of it. Working from the interior doesn't seem to follow suit here with that. Except for possibly the first belt change, there is always some other reason to pull the engine too, I mean it's designed by Ferrari. Plus, then we can make it squeky clean while it's out.

Frank, did the service done by Shelton included everything that is normally done on the major service or just T.Belts and tensioner bearings?

I also heard rumors that this might be possible on a TR, but from initial inspection when looking on my TR it seems this might only be possible with some heavy work, if certain parts could be removed first (such as the oil reservoir which hides the left bank timing belt pulleys). In addition, the firewall makes sort of a step towards the engine once it clears the top of the fuel tanks which obscures the top timing belt pulleys on both banks. I wander if the 348 has a similar design. My estimates of the work done that way, on the TR, tends to lean towards engine removel been easier, less troublesome, and offers a better chance to get things done correctly.

I read sometime ago (in this forum) that the 360 engine does not have to be removed to do a major service. By the way, I believe the F40 also has access panels that allow T. Belts changes through the firewall.

The 288GTO did have interior panels that you removed to service the front of the engine including accessory and cam belts. Why Ferrari didn't do that on all the Dinos I don't know. The dealership retirement act I suppose. On the 348 the cam belt can be changed by dropping the fuel tank rather than the engine. That's how it was done on my car at Shelton. I assume that can be done on the 355 as well.

I highly doubt someone in Maranello used enough foresight to engineer an access panel to the engine bay from the front. Besides, which is the lesser of evils, dropping the motor, or gutting the interior to gain access to the panel?

It sounds to me as though he really does not know. Don't they have books and manuals? DUH!

I was at the local dealership service dept having a general discussion with the head tech who said the engine must be pulled in the 360 (like the 355) to change the timing belt.
I seem to remember being told that in the 360 that is not necessary since access to t. belt can be obtained thru panel behind seats.Am I imagining that? In fairness to him he did say they haven't seen a 360 with enough mileage to require same.COMMENTS ?thanks
