VINCE! Hey buddy! Hows the 308 running? I completely agree with what you told Collin. Get that service done as soon as possible. That is what I did on my 308. Please don't even consider driving that car without a fresh major.

FIND OUT WHERE THE OIL IS GOING...

You don't want to hear this, but if it's really the cam seals, then there are two very bad places the oil is most likely going:

1) Onto your new cam belts, where it it may end up causing the belt to slip a tooth or so (ie: big $$). Also allegedly it enormously shortens belt life.

2) Into your alternator. (Where it will combine with dust & eat up the slip rings, requiring an alternator rebuild (not too bad), but possibly also requiring a new rotor($200 from BOSCH- been there, done that).

My biggest concern if money was the issue would be cam belts at least, provided the leak isnt too bad like you said. Once you get into it, you will take the plunge and blow a mountian of money when you tell yourself "while Im here...." If the belt jumps, you'll bend valves. A little oil wont destroy anything.

Thank you Vince. Actually, it did have the 30K mile service January 01. I have photos and receipts re the timing belt replacement, etc. So I think I am OK on that front. Any further thoughts are very much appreciated!!!

If this car is 14yrs old and hasn't had 15/30000 mile service then do it NOW!!! Replace belts, seals, water pump and keep ears open for strange noises that may be cam gear bearings!!! Take my advise... Been there, Done That!!!

I am a new Ferrari owner, and am scared too death frankly after reading some of these horror stories about repair costs. My 308GTSi leaks a bit. Not a measurable amount. Mechanic says it's cam seals, which doesn't surprise me when considering that the car has been driven a total of 6,000 miles +/- in the last 14 years. Am I hurting the car in any way by not "fixing" the leak? My mechanic said it is not uncommon at all for Italian cars to leak a bit. When I start the engine, it is not "slinging" oil at all. And it only seaps a bit after I have taken it out for a drive. Once the oil cools down, almost no leak. Thoughts???
