I dont think volvo will have the right ones for the 4 valve. Try BMW as well. They have shims for the 2 valves, didnt check about the 4 valve size.

Simon,
Here are the specs you're looking for:
2-valve shims (Fiat), 33mm in diameter, thickness range from 3.05 to 4.65mm

4-valve shims (Volvo?), 29mm in diameter, same thickness range as Fiat.

Please note that some suppliers/vendors may have thicker, or thinner shims available to them. In my years of experience working on Ferrari engines, most will utilize a shim in the range of 3.65 to 4.15mm. Hope this helps.

Can someone measure the Volvo/Fiat shims for diameter and thickness and post the details here. I realise the thickness changes but a ballpark figure so we can see if they should be 5mm or 50mm is what I mean. Then I could see if they will fit my 400's V12 also.

Great news! Thanks for the information Ben. By the way, I will be picking peoples brain really soon as I embark on a home-made major TR service. I purchased the parts from T.Rutlands today, and I will start building a cradle to place the subframe this weekend. I got the freon extracted today as well. I anticipate actual engine removal work starting sometime next week (or sooner if the cradle construction goes fast).

The 2-valve cars use Fiat shims...4-valve shims are smaller in diameter...so Volvo shims will/should do the trick.

BTW...I've got a set of 4-valve shims...80% complete, with a few used shims, as well. Drop me a note if anyone is interested...$125, or so.

Arnaldo,

Again Fiat or Volvo, as told to me by the F Dealer tech as he was putting mine in.

Does anybody know of a similar match for Testarossa valve shims?

Ferrari quoted me $20 cdn each. I picked up the volvo ones today for $3.74 cdn each. Didnt need all 16, swapped a few around as well, just flipped them over.

Paul -- some previous discussion if you're interested:

Without getting too specific, who quoted the $20 each? -- an authorized dealer? (Although I'd probably go the Volvo/Fiat route, my recollection was that valve shims were a ~$5 part from the non-dealer F part suppliers.)

Go to Baylessfiat.com. You can get them for a couple of bucks apiece. Same ones as in the fiat spyders.

On my 328 I was able to play musical valve shims. I switched them about so that as many clearances as possible were within specification. Then I bought only what was needed. The original shims were not the same size so it worked out well. This may be obvious but my fingers need typing exercise this morning.

During the reassembly of my 2 valve 308 engine, I found I had to adjust almost all of the valves slightly. I priced the Ferarri ones - $20 each, BMW M5 (which are the same) $12 each and finally I noticed one of mine had VOLVO stamped on the edge. $5 each and plenty in stock at the volvo dealer in town! Just thought I would pass that on.
