To replace the battery, you have to remove the wheel and the inner wheel arch, it's no big deal really.

Don't be surprised if the thing still don't fire even after you put in a new battery. I have an Australian '87 Mondial and I am forever chasing electrical issues. Once you get on top of one then another pops up. My starting problems were that I would turn the key and just get a buzz from the fuel regulator, so I replaced both the battery and the starter solenoid, it worked ok for a while then back to the buzz. I wired a switch over the starter positive voltage and the solenoid point to short them when required, it always started proving that I had an bad connection somewhere else. I removed the ignition switch and sprayed the electrical contacts with a contact cleaner and have never again had the problem (3 months now!).

Good luck, if you need Mondial 3.2 electrical circuits you can get from my website www.laptopshop.com.au/Web%20Pages/Personal/ferrari.htm (1.6Mb PDF)

If you plan to charge the existing battery put the charger on 2 amps and charge over night rather than 10 amps over 3-4hrs.

thanks, was planning on changing the battery anyway, in all seriousness can you replace these batteries from the top? or do I need to remove the wheel and go through the front wheel well

Sounds like the starter solenoid isn't getting enough juice - probably a weak battery. Do your dash lights dim excessively when you try to engage the starter? Probably - try charging the battery and see if that makes it all better, if not, invest in a new battery if this one is more than a couple of years old.
Be careful with the battery chargers that have a "start" position (50 amps +). My 88TR blew a relay in the fuel injection system when I tried that - an expensive "ooops"!
