Peter -- thanks for the Weber info. I wanted to check it against the data listed in the Appendix of the Haynes Weber Carb Manual, and indeed, that series is listed as "308 GT4 USA" (no year given) and the idle jet size as "0.55". One of the other 308GT4 applications does show 0.45 idle jets, but this configuration (35/36/37/38) also has a different emulsion tube (F24 vs your F36) and different main jets, air corrector jets, etc..

Peter; I had the same problem in my carbed Lotus. Did it for a month than returned to normal. Hmmm....I realized I had bought Speedway gas for the first and only time, and when I refilled with Aamco a month later the problem went away. I'm glad is was that simple for me! Moral: STAY AWAY FROM CHEAP GAS!

Sorry Patrick, I don't know why I called you by your last name.

Steve & Bill:

Weber 45/46/47/48 types.
I installed .55 jets to replace the .45 that were in there.

Another problem solved - My battery went dead! I just bought it a few weeks ago, what could it possibly be? Well I turned out the lights in the garage and I could see a small stream of light emitting out of the passenger's door. Answer: the door marker light wasn't shutting off, it was on for a week! I pulled the fuse until I can get in there to properly fix the switch (and do many other things as well, install new speakers, redo the window motors....)

It just never ends! But it sure is fun.

Peter -- which 40 DCNF series do you have 35/36/37/38, 45/46/47/48, 57/58/59/60, other)?

Great pictures as always Peter!

BTW, when does YOUR illustrated workshop manual come out?

Isn't it a good feeling to have a problem, find a fault, provide a fix, and see a result? This is the high that most Technicians live for.

Peter,
What did you end up with for idle jets, .55's or .65's? Bill

I had had this problem for quite some time (even before my engine rebuild, which I didn't diagnose properly). When pulling away from a stop, the car would hesitate and stumble, applying more throttle cleared its throat and could sing all the way to redline.

My Weber buddy came over, drove the car and told me to change the idle jets. His explanation: After just cracking open the throttle plate, this exposes the progression holes to add more fuel until the plate opens further and then the main circuit kicks in. When the jets are too small, too lean a mixture creating poor combustion. He suggested going up .10 on the idle jets. My manual states that .55's should be in there. Guess what? I didn't realise I had .45's in there (probably a half-fast attempt at trying to pass emissions testing many years ago by P.O.). I ordered all of my jets from Bayless, a Fiat/Lancia parts warehouse and installed them today....

What a world of difference! Its exactly what it should be. I drove in fifth gear all the way down to around 1500 RPM and it took it in stride. Rolling on the throttle was just smooth acceleration. On over-run, no poping or coughing, just a light burble.

I now have full confidence in my car. That's what it should be.
